Delta College waiving admission to sporting events | News
As part of an effort to invite the community to campus and learn more about Delta College, the school is waiving admissions to its athletic events this year.
Ticket prices for sporting events such as soccer, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, wrestling, basketball, baseball and softball had already been waived due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
But the school announced Tuesday that free entry to home competitions will remain in effect for at least two years as it has secured support from community sponsors including the Port of Stockton and Central State Credit Union.
In the past, ticket prices have ranged from $6 to $8.
“We would love for the community to come out and see all the positive things that are going on at Delta,” athletics director Tony Espinoza said in a media statement. “Getting out of COVID has been a struggle for many, whether financially, emotionally or physically. I think it’s great to have this opportunity for families in the community.”
The announcement comes after Delta College eliminated fees for its 2019 performing arts events, including concerts and plays, and made those events free as well.
The college said about 100 of its student-athletes transfer to colleges each year, and retention rates are higher than those of the general student population.
The free-entry policy applies to all regular-season games and tournaments, but not postseason games governed by the CCCAA, the college said.
Espinoza was not known of any other community college district that waived its entry fees for track and field events.
“We’re excited,” he said. “I would like to see more families, more prospective Delta students would have the opportunity to see the Mustangs in action.”
Delta opens a new health center on Friday
Last year, Community Medical Centers agreed to operate a new health clinic at Delta College for five years, and the two facilities will celebrate this partnership with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the facility on Friday.
The new clinic will provide non-emergency medical, dental and behavioral health care to Delta’s uninsured and underinsured students and their dependents.
More than 20,000 students attend the college each year.
“Our mission as an organization is to improve health and well-being in our community,” said Christine Noguera, CEO of CMC, in a media statement. “As Delta College begins its new academic year, we are pleased to welcome students to our newest website and to enhance their access to essential care.”
The new clinic offers a variety of services including immunizations, family planning and contraception, physical exams and sports clearances, psychiatric treatment and nursing, and reproductive health care.
Depending on household size and income, sliding fee discounts and free services will be available, and CMC will accept Medi-Cal, Medicare, and limited personal insurance plans.
When Delta College is not in session, students can still access CMC care across its network of health centers, the agency said.
“The new Delta College Health Center is a wonderful opportunity for our students to receive a wide array of quality health care services, which is why we are so grateful to partner with Community Medical Centers,” said Superintendent/President Dr. Lisa Aguilera Lawrenson Tuesday media report.
“We want to set up our students so that they have the best possible chance of succeeding in the classroom, and their health is an important part of that overall success,” she said.
Friday’s ribbon cutting will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the new clinic, located in Rooms 126 and 128 at the Locke Center.
Participants can take a guided tour of the clinic, light refreshments will be served and there is a chance to win prizes in a raffle.
