Devin Haney vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko live fight updates, results, highlights from 2023 boxing fight

LAS VEGAS, NV – It’s a battle between boxing’s old guard and new guard as Devin Haney defends his status as the undisputed lightweight champion against former lightweight king Vasiliy Lomachenko on May 20th.

Haney vs. Lomachenko will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and the fight will be televised on ESPN+ PPV in the US

Haney, 24, won the 2019 WBC interim lightweight title. His goal was to face off against Lomachenko, who was then the WBC, WBA, WBO, and ring champion. Nothing came to fruition, however, as Haney was elevated to the full title-holder and Lomachenko was named the “Franchise Champion.”

Now Haney is the undisputed champion and ready to prove he can defeat The Matrix.

“I feel like he should have fought me four years ago,” Haney said. “But now the time has come. It will be worse for him than it would have been if we had fought then. On paper, this is my toughest test. But I want it to be an easy night. I want to make it as easy as possible and come out on top.”

After setting an impressive amateur record of 396 wins-one-loss, Lomachenko won a world title in just his third professional fight. He went on to win championships in three weight classes and established himself as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world before suffering a points loss to Teofimo Lopez in 2020.

Between victories in his last three bouts, Lomachenko has also helped his country Ukraine fight Russian aggression. The ex-champ is now focused on winning back lightweight gold.

“[Haney]talks about the past, but it’s hard to say anything about the past. You can not change it. Even if you talk about it, you can’t change it. Only God can change it,” said Lomachenko. “He’s a high-level boxer. He understands boxing. He knows what to do. He can use his range. He can use his feet. He can create distance. But I have a lot of experience in this sport. It will be very interesting for me.”

Nico Ali Walsh and Danny Rosenberg end in a tie

8:43 p.m. ET: Well, that wasn’t the result many were expecting, but it was a fair decision as Ali Walsh and Rosenberger battled it out for a shared tie. Rosenberger got there late and landed the cleaner shots while Ali Walsh didn’t get the momentum going on. Back to the drawing board for Ali Walsh, who is now at 9-0-1.

8:35 p.m. ET: Okay, I spoke too soon. Rosenberger turned it into a fun and highly competitive fight going into the finals. Chances are he won’t win no matter what he does, but one will be curious to see just how good Ali Walsh really is.

8:24 p.m. ET: Ali Walsh is in control early in round five, but Rosenberger won’t turn around easily for him. He’s overwhelmed but ready to play as Ali Walsh keeps touching him with the jab and the occasional power shot as he chases him around the ring. Rosenberger has occasionally landed a clean hook or uppercut, but that’s not enough at this point.

8:08 p.m. ET: We open the ESPN portion of the map with Nico Ali Walsh – grandson of the great Muhammad Ali – as he seeks his ninth win as a pro. Across the ring is Danny Rosenberger (13-9-4). Don’t expect Rosenberger to resist Ali Walsh too much, but we’ll see how that plays out.
