The Durango High School girls’ basketball team was five points behind Grand Junction Central at halftime Friday. However, the Demons put on a tremendous run in the second half to not only take the lead, but also continue to pull away from the Warriors. The Demons beat Central 26-2 in the third quarter and eventually won the conference game 51-32.
The DHS boys also took on Grand Junction Central on Friday but fell 49-32 in their contest.
The Durango squads were also scheduled to play at Grand Junction on Saturday.
IHS Boys defeat Panthers, 55-50
Stunned by Montezuma-Cortez’s early three-point shooting, the Ignacio Bobcats rallied to take a one-point halftime lead, retain it after three quarters and go through 55-50 Friday night at IHS Gymnasium.
Junior guard Phillip Quintana secured the home team’s comeback in the second quarter with seven points and then added eight – six over two of his three threes – during the final frame for a game-high 17. Junior center/forward Gabe Cox followed with 14 points, while senior guard Eppie Quintana and junior guard Devante Montoya contributed seven each.
Lady ‘Cats stay home
On Friday, Trae Seibel’s side trailed MCHS 13-11 after a quarter of varsity girls basketball and took control in the second. IHS beat the Panthers 24-8 and went into halftime 35-21. Although Montezuma-Cortez hit back after the break – and won the second half by 35:33 – Ignacio had enough lead to win by 68:56.
Bras girls bid for excitement
It’s not often that the Pagosa Springs girls’ basketball lead disappears completely by 11 points.
But after Bayfield, the ultimate underdog of the 3A/4A Intermountain League, nearly erased their halftime lead on Friday, the Pirates beat the Wolverines 19-2 in the final quarter and a half to secure a 37-18 away win.
Pirates torch BHS boys late
Ready to make Friday’s 3A/4A Intermountain bout the stuff of league lore, the Bayfield Wolverines and Pagosa Springs Pirates weren’t about to budge in two-and-a-half quarters.
But when PSHS senior guard Gunner Dozier and second guard Colt Lewis buried consecutive 3-pointers to increase the visitors’ lead to 38-28, with 3:09 staying in third, a side finally had one real upper hand. Senior guard/forward Kayson Shahan also dropped a three while scoring seven points in the quarter that ended with Pagosa Springs leading 42-33. Unfortunately for the boys at BHS, the Pirates were just getting started.
Lewis knocked down two more Treys and Dozier made another before ending the duel by going 6 of 6 from the free throw line while PSHS – ranked 8th in CHSAANow.com Class 4A poll this week – scored 27 points in the last eight minutes to a 69:44 victory.
