Doctors: view your latest Mini Practice Profile to learn more your billings and proactively address any potential issues

Mini Practice Profiles (MPPs) for 2021 are now available for members to view online. They provide a statistical analysis of your billings from the 2021 calendar year. MPPs are generated for physicians who receive Medical Services Plan (MSP) Fee Payments (FFS), including any billings or back payments issued as of March 31, 2022.

The Patterns of Practice Committee (POPC) and Doctors of BC provide MPPs so that physicians billing MSPs can see if their billing patterns are within the normal statistical limits of their peer group. The information comes from the larger database of annual physician profiles used by the Department of Health to track billing patterns and reference them in MSP audits.

Why should you display your mini practice profile?

  • The MPPs provide valuable information that you can use to address potential problems. It’s important to understand the flags on your profile as they can put you at higher risk of an MSP audit.
  • MPPs include all fee claims paid by MSP on behalf of ICBC and WCB that you have identified as the physician who performed the service or as the referring physician, in addition to the FPSC and SSC fee codes.
  • By reviewing your individual profile, you can see if your billing patterns are within the statistical norm for your peer group. This allows you to address potential billing issues early and proactively;
  • It can also alert you to flagged charges or services – flagging occurs when you fall outside the norm in some aspect of service delivery or billing. Knowing this, you can take action to avoid a potential audit. And
  • Understanding the flags on your profile can help you determine if you should make proactive changes to your statements.

Type of Practice Determination (TOP)

  • The type of practice is your province-wide peer group that you have been placed in for that calendar year;
  • Your TOP is determined by the type of services you were paid for that calendar year. In other words, TOP correlates with “functional specialty” as opposed to “recording specialty”;
  • By classifying all MSP FFS items billed by a physician, your type of practice can be determined by identifying the specialty billed most frequently;
  • Example: If the majority of a doctor’s income relates to fees for orthopedic interventions, the doctor is considered TOP orthopedics regardless of the specialty entered.
