Dyson Sphere Program: How To Get Hydrogen

Factory simulations scratch a special itch. Every facet of the finishing, crafting and assembly process is in the hands of the player, giving them complete control over what they produce and how. A micromanager’s dream, these games allow the player to see through complicated projects from start to finish.

In order to reach this last step, they need a variety of resources, some easier to obtain than others. Hydrogen is a fundamental resource that requires a surprising series of steps to obtain. Here is everything the player needs to know to get this important resource.

Dyson Sphere program is as big and complex as the in-game factory operations, and unfortunately the game doesn’t have a detailed tutorial to guide players through some of its more confounding elements. Hydrogen is a prime example. Hydrogen is a key component in building the energy matrix required to research mid-game technologies. Without Hydrogen, the player’s progress will stall, but it’s not obvious how to get this critical element.

Simulations are sometimes frustrating. One of the frustrating things about making hydrogen is that it can’t be made in isolation, it’s only available as a by-product. In short, the player only gets hydrogen when they craft something else, e.g. e.g. oil. There’s no workaround, but the actual process of refining and saving is relatively cheap and painless.

How to get hydrogen

The first step is to unlock the oil extractor and refinery in the tech tree. Once the player has unlocked the necessary technologies, construction can begin. The Oil Extractor should be built first and – as befits a real life sim – it can only be placed on Crude Oil Nodes. These knots are easily recognizable conical outcrops. To build an Oil Extractor, the player will need 12 Steel, 12 Stone Blocks, 6 Circuit Boards, and 4 Plasma Exciters.

Once placed on a Crude Oil node, the Oil Extractor will automatically generate Crude Oil every second. However, crude oil is not very helpful, so the next step is to refine it. Building an Oil Refinery requires 10 Steel, 10 Stone Blocks, 6 Circuit Boards, and 6 Plasma Exciters. The player must also build a sorter that will transport the oil to the oil refinery and get the assembly line going at full speed.

In the Oil Refinery, click the gear and select Refined Oil (the oil drop icon). The oil refinery now begins separating the crude oil into refined oil and hydrogen in a 2:1 ratio. It doesn’t matter how much hydrogen the player has if they don’t have a way to store it, so it’s important to also build a storage tank or two to collect the hydrogen produced. Building a Storage Tank requires 8 Iron Ingots, 4 Stone Bricks, and 4 Glass. Once the storage tank is built, the player can start hoarding their hydrogen and get back to work.
