Erik ten Hag contract, salary at Manchester United: Has Dutch manager ever been sacked?

New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is the latest person the Red Devils have turned to for a reversal of their form and fortunes.

Since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, United have not won the Premier League and have seen four permanent managers come and go.

Ten Hag replaces Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was at the top for almost three years and failed to win a silver.

Ten Hag will be under pressure to turn the tide at Old Trafford and early signs are not promising after losing his first two games in charge.

Ten Hag’s contract length and salary at Man United

After evaluating their options, Manchester United officially appointed Ten Hag as their newest manager on 21 April 2022.

The Dutchman received a contract until June 2025 with an option to extend it by another year.

Ten Hag joined Old Trafford after four and a half years as Ajax manager.

According to The Sun, the 52-year-old earns £9million a year (£173k a week) as a Manchester United manager.

That salary is likely to increase if Ten Hag can succeed at Old Trafford, with the likes of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp reportedly earning much more.

Has Ten Hag ever been fired?

Since starting his coaching career in 2012, Ten Hag has never been fired from four different clubs.

His previous good results have actually made him climb the coaching ladder quite quickly.

Ten Hag’s first managerial experience came with Go Ahead Eagles in 2012-13, guiding them back into the Dutch top flight for the first time in 17 years.

His performances there caught the eye of Bayern Munich, who appointed him to coach their U23s after just one season with Go Ahead.

In 2015, Ten Hag was then offered the coaching role at Utrecht, which he led to fifth and fourth places in the Eredivisie.

Ajax would then call in late 2017 after they fired Marcel Keiser.

Ten Hag would end up winning three Eredivisie titles with the Dutch giants and guiding them to the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League semi-finals. Ajax beat Real Madrid and Juventus en route to the last four and were seconds away from the final before Tottenham triumphed with an injury-time goal from Lucas Moura.

Ten Hag’s early results as manager at other clubs

It was a horrific start for Ten Hag as Manchester United manager, who suffered a 2-1 home defeat by Brighton before losing 4-0 away to Brentford.

The Red Devils are bottom of the Premier League for the first time in 30 years and fans are already wondering if Ten Hag is cut out for the job.

It takes time for some managers to make an impact when they join a new club, but the Dutchman has generally performed well in previous roles.

Ten Hag won his very first game as manager with Go Ahead Eagles 2-0 and only lost in his fifth game as manager.

It was a better start for him with Bayern Munich II as he started his tenure with eight straight wins.

Things didn’t go so smoothly in Utrecht as Ten Hag lost his first game in charge 3-2 before bouncing back and going four games unbeaten.

Ten Hag then won his first game with Ajax 2-0 and only lost in his eighth game in the dugout.

This latest spell at Manchester United is therefore the first time in Ten Hag’s coaching career that he has lost his first two games at a new club.
