Man United 2-1 Barcelona (agg: 4-3)

Barcelona struck first in the heavyweight showdown at Old Trafford, David De Gea failing to save Robert Lewandowski’s penalty in the 18th minute as the visitors regained the lead in the tie. The Spaniards dominated possession in the first half but were pushed back when Fred completed a ball from Bruno Fernandes two minutes after the break. United substitute Antony then scored the winning goal, passing Marc-André ter Stegen in the 73rd minute

Nantes 0-3 Juventus (agg: 1-4)

Juventus edged out ten-man Nantes thanks to an inspired Ángel Di María. The Argentine scored a hat-trick after just five minutes, including an unstoppable curling drive. Another try was blocked by the hand of Canarias defender Nicolas Pallois, who was sent off, with the Juve winger converting the resulting penalty. With 12 minutes remaining, Di María completed his treble with a headed look at the far post.

Midtjylland 0-4 Sporting CP (Agg: 1-5)

Trailing late in the first leg, Sporting CP built on that momentum when Sebastián Coates scored his first goal in Denmark. Midtjylland’s Paulinho was then sent off after receiving two bookings in as many minutes of the first half and Pedro Gonçalves put the visitors’ advantage to good use with a superb volley. His deflected second and an own goal by Stefan Gartenmann completed a great away win.

Rennes 2-1 Shakhtar (agg: 3-3, Shakhtar win 5-4 on penalties)

Andriy Trubin saved three penalties in the shootout as tired Shakhtar progressed in sudden death and Kevin Kelsy converted the winner. Karl Toko Ekambi shot from the bar to equalize in regular time and substitute Ibrahim Salah seemed to have won it for Rennes when he scored early in the second half of extra time. However, 18-year-old Jeanuël Belocian’s late own goal threw the pitmen a lifeline, which they duly grabbed.

What next?

The winners will take their place in Friday’s round of 16 draw, where they will not be seeded.

The seeded teams are Arsenal, Betis, Fenerbahçe, Ferencváros, Feyenoord, Fribourg, Real Sociedad, Union Saint-Gilloise.

Union Berlin 3-1 Ajax (agg: 3-1)

Former Ajax youth player Danilho Doekhi sealed Union’s first knockout victory in the Europa League at the expense of his old club. Robin Knoche’s penalty and Josip Juranović’s finish had led Union 2-0 at half-time. Mohammed Kudus gave Ajax hope with an early goal in the second half but Doekhi netted a powerful header and the visitors ended up with ten men after Edson Álvarez was sent off in the closing stages.

Monaco 2-3 Leverkusen (agg: 5-5, Leverkusen win 5-3 on penalties)

Leverkusen scored all five penalties to end a frantic draw. Florian Wirtz gave the guests the lead, but Wissam Ben Yedder equalized with a penalty. Exequiel Palacios and Amine Adli then scored to give Leverkusen a 5-4 lead, but Breel Embolo responded with three minutes remaining to put the tie into extra time. Eliot Matazo hit the bar in a penalty shoot-out for Monaco; the visitors took full advantage of the offer.

PSV 2-0 Sevilla (agg: 2-3)

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side came tantalizingly close to extra time despite not bothering their guests for most of the evening. Ivan Rakitić shot the visitors’ crossbar after the break but PSV took heart from Luuk de Jong’s 77th-minute shot against his old club. De Jong then had a second ruled out for offside and more chances fell to Johan Bakayoko before Fábio Silva’s second goal came too late.

Roma 2-0 Salzburg (agg: 2-1)

Andrea Belotti’s close-range header and Paulo Dybala’s impressive volley helped José Mourinho’s men turn the tie in Rome in the first half. The Giallorossi dominated from the start and broke through just after the half-hour when Belotti nodded off after good work from Leonardo Spinazzola. Seven minutes later, Spinazzola selected Dybala, who gave his side an overall win with an impressive first performance.
