FC Dallas vs. Sporting Kansas City: Recap, highlights and more

FRISCO, Texas – Welcome to Keeping Score: Your Complete FC Dallas Game Day Experience.

Throughout the 2023 season, with Keeping Score, we strive to bring you complete FC Dallas game day coverage, covering everything from the game itself, to the food, to the fans that make the game so great, our “Becky G Forecast” (yes, really) and everything in between in a fun and digestible way.

Last week, FC Dallas couldn’t rip the metaphorical monkey off their backs in Vancouver, forfeiting a 1-0 lead through an own goal to facilitate a tie.

After a newfound rivalry game against a renewed one, FC Dallas welcomed one of their original 10 MLS peers, Sporting Kansas City. Sporting KC were yet to score in three games despite leading the league in both shots And Shots on goal. Also, Sporting KC had conceded just one goal all year: a goal in the sixth minute in the season opener against Portland Timbers.

The goal drought didn’t last long in Frisco. Sporty KCs Daniel Salloi scored the club’s first goal of the 2023 season in the 11th minute. FC Dallas ended the first half with an arguably much more promising look than Sporting KC.

In the 55th minute, Alan Velasco leveled the game by flicking the top right corner of the goal from the top of the 18-yard box.

Sporting KC were awarded a penalty in the 61st minute for a foul on Paes in the 18-yard box. The penalty was taken by Willy Agada and saved by Paes. The referees reviewed the penalty and ruled that Paes left his seat prematurely, awarding another penalty to Sporting KC. At the second attempt, this time by Erik Thommy, Paes saved it again and rose in a monstrous roar From the crowd.

From the 82nd minute the match got a little more Jesus. Jesus Jiménez made his debut for FC Dallas and minutes later Jesus Ferreira gave FC Dallas a 2-1 lead in the 84th minute.

FC Dallas won possession (51%-47%), corners (7-4) and shots (12-11). With the win, FC Dallas improves to 2-1-1.

FC fit check

Can you tell it was chilly in DFW on Saturday?

Apart from Jesus Ferreira, basically the whole club rocked long sleeves or some warmer jackets. Maybe he wasn’t freezing because of the fire emanating from his super cool sunglasses.

As usual, Paul Arriola, Nkosi Tafari and Sebastien Ibeagha arrived with their stylish fits.

And welcome to the club, Jesús Jiménez! Who doesn’t love a comfy Ralph Lauren Polo Bear sweater. You win, sir.

Frisco foodie fun

We returned with some reviews for dining at Toyota Stadium! Since there was a street game last week, I tried a questionable viral food craze from McDonald’s. But a return to Frisco means another concession review. The options for this match in the Opinion poll on my Twitter (@IamLivengood) were: Monster Taco, Elote on a stick, Funnel Sticks with Cherry Sauce or Hot Chicken Mac n Cheese.

People were talking and the winner was the hot chicken mac n cheese! Before I give the review, here is the description of where to get it and how much it costs.

  • Hot Chicken Mac-N-Cheese: Creamy white cheddar mac and cheese topped with hot Nashville sauce and BBQ seasoning, topped off with fresh spring onions and CASA M Chain Reaction seasoning. Location: Booth 5 – Burgers and more, Booth 8 – Heineken Corner. It was just over $12.

OK, that was so good … if you like spicy food. I have a pretty high spice tolerance and it was the perfect amount of spice and flavor for me. It was nice and warm (which was just right given the 50 degree weather on game day). You must of course mix everything together before taking a bite. The cheese was melted, the chicken was tender.

Well done. Bravo.

This was a big step up from the grilled birria cheese in my opinion.

Toyota Stadium new concession rankings:

  1. Hot Chicken Mac-N-Cheese
  2. Grilled Birria cheese

FCD fan of the game

In the last home game, I introduced you to Nathan Scoggins, a member of El Matador. You can read more about his #DTID story here.

In this game we have retired United States Air Force Sergeant Leslie H. Meier Jr. on deck. FC Dallas honored Meier, who is a Vietnam War veteran, on Saturday.

Fun fact: He also ran the personal security service for Nancy Sinatra, daughter of Frank Sinatra. Very cool!

#DTID man of the match

Maarten Paes.

Paes came up huge in the big moment. His consecutive saves kept FC Dallas in the game and changed the whole momentum of the second half. Who knows what will happen if FC Dallas are down 2-1 in the second half instead of drawing?

He’s made a name for himself and deserves to be man of the match.
