FDI World Dental Federation launches toolkit on how to make dentistry more sustainable

Dental practices can use the tools as a guide to making their work more environmentally responsible, and by tracking progress, they can receive recognition awards for their efforts.

GENEVA, September 12, 2022 /CNW/ — FDI World Dental Federation (FDI) has one today Sustainable Dentistry Toolkitto help dental practices understand what steps they can take to ensure their work is environmentally responsible. By providing dentists and dental teams with tools and strategies to implement more environmentally friendly practices and track progress, FDI hopes to make a tangible contribution to reducing the environmental impact of the profession.

The toolkit continued to evolve until the release of a Consensus Statement on Environmentally Sound Oral Health, earlier this year, which outlines the challenges and solutions to improve sustainability in dentistry. It also recognizes that the oral health sector has a responsibility to provide environmentally responsible care without jeopardizing patient well-being.

“Dentists and dental teams can play an active role in reducing the environmental impact of dentistry while ensuring optimal patient care. This online Sustainable Dentistry Toolkit is a step to help dental practices take action to reduce their carbon footprint,” said Prof. Ihsane Ben Yahya, FDI President. She continued, “I hope that our work today will have a positive impact on our future generations so they can enjoy healthy lives and a healthy planet.”

Developed as part of the FDI Sustainability in Dentistry project, the toolkit consists of an interactive platform that guides users to align their activities with more sustainable practices by providing them with practical solutions. Dentists and their teams can face various challenges and then receive bronze, silver or gold awards for their practice. The interactive challenges give dental teams the tools to raise awareness, implement change and become more environmentally responsible. Dental organizations and practices around the world are encouraged to register and make green choices as a team to demonstrate their commitment to our planet.

About the project sustainability in dentistry
The FDI Sustainability in Dentistry project was created to motivate and inspire commitment to reducing collective CO2 Dentistry footprint targeting practitioners, patients and the supply chain itself. The project will produce a range of tools and resources for dental practices and patients to be more environmentally responsible. Developed in collaboration with multiple stakeholders, the consensus statement has led to the development of the online Sustainable Dentistry Toolkit to help dental practices reduce their environmental impact. A Pledge for Sustainable Dentistry is also being developed, which will provide guidelines and targets for achieving a sustainable sourcing and supply process. Co-signers throughout the supply chain are encouraged to sign the pledge.

The project is supported by our founding partners: Colgate, HALEON, Dentsply Sirona, Procter & Gamble and TePe. www.fdiworlddental.org/sustainability-dentistry
