Why GD Chaves can beat Sporting

Her run in 2023 wasn’t very impressive. They secured draws against Pacos de Ferreira, Arouca, Boavista and Vizela, won against Maritimo and lost against Vitora. Vitor Campelos’ side will be motivated to take the three points to impress the home crowd at the Estádio Municipal Eng. Manuel Branco Teixeira.

The Trasmontanos clinched a 2-0 win in the last meeting between the teams, ending a five-game losing streak in the game. Nonetheless, Chaves is 11th in goals scored per game (1 goal), so they need to be more focused here at home. They also total 13.3 shots and 4.3 corners per game despite a 46% ball possession rate. The team has only kept four clean sheets this season.

Chaves is without Bruno Langa (suspension), Jonathan Arriba (muscle), Luther Singh (muscle), Hector Hernandez (knee), Nwankwo Obioro (muscle), Joao Correia (muscle) and Paulo Vitor (physical). Chaves should be looking to match or better season averages of 13.3 total shots, 8.3 successful dribbles, 4.3 corners and 1.7 great chances.

Why Sporting can beat GD Chaves

Sporting have recovered from their slow start to the season and are now in the hunt for Champions League football. They lost 2-1 to holders Porto in their last league game before drawing 1-1 against FC Midtjylland in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League knockout stages on Thursday. Sporting are in the top four in Liga Portugal with 38 points from 12 wins, two draws and six losses.

Sporting have good stats that underpin their productive run this season. They are fourth in goals scored per game (2 goals), third at home this season and seventh in goals conceded per game (1.1 goals). In addition, the guests have won five of the last six direct duels. Revenge is on Sporting’s agenda ahead of this game as Chaves won the game 2-0 in August, which was the only win against this team since 2017.

Sporting Lisbon are without midfielder Daniel Braganca (ligaments), Hidemasa Morita (muscle) and Dario Essugo (muscle). Pedro Goncalves, who has scored 10 goals this season, is ready to start alongside Marcus Edwards and Francisco Trincao, who have scored six and three goals respectively. Sporting should be able to surpass their season averages of 15.8 total shots, 6.8 corners and 62.5% ball possession per game.

GD Chaves is unbeaten in a string of consecutive games but has just won one of his last 10 games in all competitions. Their poor record on home turf could also show that they will fight again in this game. Sporting Lisbon have shown good form as a guest, winning four and drawing one in their last six games. Given the difference in quality and experience between the two teams, we support Sporting Lisbon to get all three points.

Final GD Chaves-Sporting Prediction & Pick: Sporting (-280)
