Here’s how to use niacinamide right and its benefits for skin

Good skin care is all about choosing the right ingredients for your skin and following them diligently. While cleansing, toning and moisturizing your skin, you can add certain other components to accentuate your skin’s natural beauty. One such ingredient that most people swear by these days is niacinamide. It has become a staple of our skincare routine and can work wonders when left on the skin permanently. This nutrient is a skin benefit and is used to treat a variety of skin conditions.

Health Shots has teamed up with Dr. Kiran Sethi, a skin and wellness specialist, to understand the importance of niacinamide in everyday skincare.

What is niacinamide?

“Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it’s a wonderful topical B-complex vitamin. First and foremost, it reduces oil secretion in most people with oily skin. So when used in amounts of around 5 percent at the right pH of around 5-6, it can reduce the amount of oil our skin exudes. In addition, it can help reduce your pore size. Overall, this leads to smaller pores with less oil,” says Dr. Sethi.

She also adds, “Another thing that niacinamide is really helpful with is that it can help reduce pigmentation, and it can also curb issues like inflammation that often cause skin pigmentation.” So not only does it treat the root cause, it can also help contain the underlying problems.”

How can niacinamide be used daily?

This ingredient can be used once or twice a day as it is completely safe, gentle and non-irritating to the skin when properly formulated, according to the expert. When found in face washes or cleansers, it doesn’t show as much effectiveness. Hence, she suggests using it in the form of leave-on applications rather than serums for effective results.

Recently shared Dr. Rashmi Shetty, a dermatologist, took to her social media to share how this ingredient can be stacked with other skincare ingredients.

During the day, she prefers to keep it simple and keep layers to a minimum. So, if someone wants to use niacinamide during the day, following the order of stratification will yield optimal results.
