How To Beat Calus In Destiny 2’s Legendary Lightfall Campaign

As with The Witch Queen, Bungie has given us another legendary campaign mode for Lightfall. And while players aren’t thrilled with the expansion’s story content, the combat challenges are still quite fun and can prove quite difficult in the end.

There is one particular segment, the final boss of the entire story, Calus, which is far more difficult than anything that came before it, as I think a final boss should be. I’ve heard of people stuck with him hoursand I’ll admit I probably died 25 times the first time I tried to beat him, although on my second character I did it on the first try when I figured out what to do.

Obviously this is not the case only strategy, but it’s what I found very effective. And it’s not literal cheese either for this segment, so go to Google if you want. So, here’s my loadout and tactics for a “legitimate” fight:

Loading:

Osteo Striga – This is the key to getting the whole thing working and if you want a cheat code for the whole campaign use Osteo. The constant poison ticks mean Calus will continue to take damage even while you’re busy battling tormentors, clearing ads, or scurrying around the room. Build up Venom whenever possible, as the ticks will also keep him from making a beach shield.

Glare GL – I use Truthteller but honestly that’s mostly just for stunning tormentors as these are the “lower level” tormentors that are actually vulnerable to blind and freeze unlike the boss levels.

Retrofit Escapade – A machine gun buff boosted the weapon class, but this target-locking Seraph machine gun does great damage. I mainly use it to shred the tormentors since you can target their weak points.

armor – I won’t give a full build here, just make sure you have anti-solar armor mods on your chest as that’s what you’ll take the most damage from I believe. Or Void for Tormentors if you like.

Subclass Beach – Yes, I know some people skip Strand here because you don’t have a “real” Strand build and you might like your own subclass better. But when Calus gets his Beach Shield, you’ll want the subclass to take it down fast (a grapple melee will erase almost everything) and in the final melee segment you’ll really want the grapple.

Tactics:

stage 1 – Once he’s damageable, just start pumping him with Osteo Striga bullets to get the poison flowing. Use Osteo to remove any other adds that spawn on the bridge between you and Calus. Go back to the area where you first started and damage it until you break through its first phase.

After that, use your Strand Super on him to bring him down to around half health or below. Maybe you don’t want to damage it to much from here until you kill the first tormentor lest two spawn at once. I would still mostly fight in the square launch area, clear gauges and kite the Tormentor if it makes it to you. Poison him, blind him, shred his weak points with Retrofit. Keep in mind that the Tormentors can also be taken down.

Keep pumping Calus full of Striga rounds and he’ll just keep ticking until you finally kill him. When his beach sign pops up, just use a beach skill or two to take him down. Hitting him with the grapple himself will stagger him. You really don’t need to be mobile in this segment if you can clear adds and tormentors fast enough. Calus can perform a beam move to hit you on the platform with encroaching darkness if you take too long. If this is the case, you will have to exit the platform and return to the platform after a loop.

stage 2 – There is essentially only one rule here: do not let the edge attack you. The is the main reason I think you should take Strand with you, because when you zipline around, Calus can’t smack you off the edge when you’re in your literal grip. So the tactic here is to dash all the way through the arena, turn around and shoot Calus with Osteo and Retrofit while he’s attacking you, and then dash across the arena again right when he’s about to hit you. Osteo can also eliminate spawning Psions, so don’t let them build up. I wouldn’t advise leaving any tormentors alive when you get to this stage as they don’t despawn between stages and make everything much more difficult. You won’t really have time to kill them now since Calus accuses you all the time and you don’t want them to oppress you. I would actually delay killing Calus in stage 1 to make sure you killed both.

This part is just patience and watching the venom at work. You should also have a second Strand Super during this section, so use it to drain a large chunk of his health before wearing him down further. When he gets a beach sign, just melee grab it and then dash away. Repeat until dead.

The main thing to take away from here, even if you don’t have Osteo Striga, is tick damage, because you’ll want Calus to take damage while you’re dealing with other stuff. So if you don’t have Osteo Striga you can use Anarchy or Witherhoard but Osteo is the best if you ask me.

Much luck!
