3 Steps to Breeding Axolotls in Minecraft

#1 Find food for your axolotls

In general, you need to mine pig iron and then smelt it in the furnace to get iron ingots, which you can use to craft an Empty Bucket. Once you have the bucket, go to the lukewarm ocean or warm ocean biome to use it to catch the tropical fish. Try to get at least 2 buckets of tropical fish.

#2 Find 2 axolotls

You need 2 live axolotls to breed them. Axolotls can only spawn in the lush cave biomes, where blocks of clay are surrounded by pools of water. And the only way to find that specific biome in survival mode is by mining underground (not too deep, usually between the Y layer from 0 to 40).

If you have access to creative mode, you can just type that /locate biome minecraft:lush_caves command and it will show you the coordinates of the nearest lush cave.

Once you’ve found a lush cave, try wandering around looking for pools of water. Eventually you will find some beautiful creatures swimming in the gloomy cave.

#3 Breed axolotls

To breed axolotls, place the bucket of tropical fish in your hot bar, look at the axolotls and right-click on them. When you see the red particles floating above their head, they switch to love mode and soon start producing a baby axolotl.

You can feed the baby axolotl buckets of tropical fish to speed up its growth. Each bucket reduces growing time by 10%. Rinse and repeat this process until you have an army of axolotls or until you have a blue axolotl.
