How to Enchant in Minecraft

Enchant is an important feature in Minecraft that allows you to enhance tools, weapons, and armor. Do you want your tools to last longer? Or just increase the damage? Let’s see how to enchant in Minecraft!

5 steps to enchanting in Minecraft

To give you an idea of how complex enchantment is in Minecraft, we’re going to walk you through the steps and materials needed to set up the enchantment area.

  • You need at least 2 diamonds
  • You should have a decent amount of leather and cane to craft books
  • You’ll need another 3 Diamonds to craft a Diamond Pickaxe, which you can later use to mine 4 Obsidian

Let’s dive deep into each step!

#1 Make an enchanting table

The magic table is the core block for magic in Minecraft. You can craft it with 1 Book, 2 Diamonds and 4 Obsidian by following the crafting recipe below.

This block can only be obtained through crafting. Unless you can access the creative inventory or use commands.

#2 Make some bookshelves (optional)

The effect of the enchantment depends entirely on how many bookshelves you place around the enchantment table. While it’s optional to craft and set up some bookshelves, we still recommend having at least 15 bookshelves. In this way you can enchant in Minecraft at the maximum level.

The bookshelf can be crafted from 6 wooden planks and 3 books. So if you want to set up a proper magic area, you will need 90 planks and 45 books, or 45 leather and 135 paper.

When you have the bookshelves, place them around the adorable table with 1 block between them. Also, don’t put solid blocks in these gaps as it will ruin the effect of the bookshelves.

#3 Find some lapis lazuli

In the past, you didn’t need lapis lazuli to enchant in Minecraft. But things have changed! Aside from decorative purposes, lapis lazuli can now also be used as an enchanting material in the enchanting board.

You can use 1-3 lapis lazuli for each enchantment. The more you use, the stronger the effect of the enchantment. So let’s dig deep underground and find those shiny lapis lazuli ores!

#4 Prepare some levels

Besides the enchanting table and the lapis lazuli, you need levels to enchant in minecraft! Depending on how many bookshelves you use, the required level cost can vary from 1 to 30. Because of this, we recommend mob farming or finding dungeons to farm for XP.

Keep in mind that you shouldn’t enchant with the low-level cost option, although it’s a lot cheaper, the enchantments it gives are quite rubbish. Unless you just want to temporarily enchant your tools or reset the current enchantment.

#5 Enchant!

Once you have everything set up, prepare your items and lapis lazuli. Then right click on the enchantment table and place the item you wish to enchant into the left slot. The right slot is used to insert lapis lazuli.

If you do it right, you can see 3 lines appearing in the right pane. The top one is the cheapest, but also with low enchantments. And the third row is the best option, which will cost you 30 levels (assuming you have all 15 bookshelves).

Just pick one of them and let your luck bless you. Your levels and lapis lazuli will be consumed right after, and you can get the enchanted items back into your hot bar.
