At first glance, this doesn’t seem like such a daunting task as the only thing players have to worry about is a speck of chicken fat at the foot of the ladder. Unfortunately, each time players clean up the grease stain, another bead will hurl down, making it impossible for them to ever complete their task. Luckily, the ladder isn’t the only way to escape from the ship’s hold.

After regaining control of Guybrush, players should pick up the pamphlet and then open the box to find Murray the talking skull. Strictly speaking, players don’t have to do this right away, but since they’ll have to do it eventually, it makes sense to get it out of the way now and take the opportunity to talk to it about Captain Madison. You can also mess up the grip a bit just to annoy Gullet, but this part is entirely optional unless players want the Super Swabbie achievement.

After exhausting all dialogue options with Murray, players should take the mop and use it to clean up the chicken fat on the floor. You’ll then want to use it on the three screws on the edge of the porthole, topping up the grease after each dab. When all three are lubed, players can use the knife to remove them screwscausing the porthole to fall to the ground.

before Return to Monkey Island Players can exit through the porthole, but must first smear it with chicken fat, meaning they have to pick up the mop again and alternate their dabs between the grease on the floor and the porthole. After lubricating the gaping porthole three times, Guybrush is able to slip through and then finds himself at the side of the ship.

Although it is possible to reach the ship’s keel here by going left, players should instead go right towards the small anchor and then use the ladder to climb up and over the railing. On deck, they find the ghost pirate LeChuck and some of the other crew members, the former of whom will task Guybrush with finding the final ingredient for the special potion needed to reach Monkey Island: a flattened skull.

Return to Monkey Island is now available for PC and Nintendo Switch.
