How to export from LastPass and import passwords to 1Password

In general, people don’t often use more than one password manager app. With such security apps, users tend to pick one and stick with it. If you happen to switch to 1Password, you’ll want to export passwords from other sites like Google or LastPass, take all your credentials with you, and import them into 1Password. Luckily, it’s easy and this guide will get you through it in no time.

There are countless apps for password management. For example, LastPass has long been a top-notch password management app. Recently, the Android app has become more and more buggy for users like me. The autofill feature feels clunky and uncooked, which makes it really difficult to use at times.

For the past few weeks, I’ve begun a passive search for a new password management tool. Through some research, I found that 1Password was still going strong and thriving, and for good reason. 1Password falls under the same category of password management tools as LastPass. It stores your website login information, secure notes, and payment information in a secure vault.

One standout feature was 1Password’s autofill feature, which uses a general rather than an app switcher, allowing you to find and easily fill in your matching password without having to switch between windows. Overall, 1Password is a very good app, especially now that it’s been facelifted in 1Password 8. Of course, 1Password also lets you import passwords from other websites, making it easier to transfer.

Export passwords from…

LastPass

Most password management apps make it very easy to export your passwords, whether to move to another website or just to keep them safe somewhere else. For some reason, LastPass only allows you to export your passwords to a CSV file via the Chrome extension. The website won’t let you use this feature and opts to export a CSV text string, which you would have to copy and paste to import these passwords into 1Password.

To export your passwords from LastPass to Chrome:

  1. Make sure you have the LastPass Chrome extension installed.
  2. Click on the LastPass extension icon and click on it Account Settings.
  3. click Progressive and then export.
  4. Choose LastPass CSV file.
  5. Enter your Master Password and click Continue.

Once you do this, a CSV file will be downloaded to your computer immediately. You can use this as a local backup and import your passwords to a new site.

Google’s password manager

Google also has a password manager, and you might not even know you’re using it. If you do, chances are you’ve destroyed a few sets of credentials. Google makes it easy to export passwords from its password manager.

To export a CSV file from Google Password Manager:

  1. In Chrome, go to passwords.google.com.
  2. From there, click the Settings gear to the top right.
  3. blow export and confirm.
  4. Repeat entering your password.

From there you should see a downloaded CSV file. Keep it in a safe place until you are ready to use it. From there you can import passwords into 1Password.

Import CSV file with passwords into 1Password

Once you have a CSV file, importing your passwords into 1Password is straightforward and fast. You can just give 1Password the file and it will parse it into many readable sets of credentials. To import passwords into 1Password via CSV file:

  1. Go to 1password.com and log in.
  2. Under the personally section, tap Settings gear.
  3. Choose import data and type Miscellaneous under the list of services.
  4. From there you can drop or select your exported CSV file from LastPass or another website.

There is an option to get it directly from LastPass or Chrome, but this requires you to copy and paste the CSV text. We generally recommend using a CSV file as it can act as a local backup on your computer in case something goes wrong. Additionally, CSV files generally do not pose any compatibility issues.

All in all, exporting from LastPass and importing passwords into 1Password is pretty easy, although it takes a few minutes. This process can also be used to import from other websites as most use CSV files to transfer important data.
