How to Get the Dark Moon Ring and What It Does
The Dark Moon Ring is a very important item in elden ring which is required to complete Witch Ranni’s quest line. In order to obtain it, players must visit a familiar location midway through Ranni’s questline, implied by Ranni’s “final” gift to the player at this point. Ranni’s Questline grants access to several very useful and powerful items, an alternate ending, and even a nod to FromSoftware’s previous titles.
elden ring is an Action RPG that is developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. As a battered warrior unable to die, previously sent away from the lands in between, players must follow the lead of mercy and face demigods to acquire the major runes. Shards of the Elden Ring, these powerful runes will enable their bearer to ascend the throne as the Elden Lord.
Acquiring the Discarded Palace Key
The ring itself is in a location that most players will be very familiar with, but requires a special key before it can be acquired. The Discarded Palace Key is acquired as a reward from Ranni the Witch during her quest line. Players must continue Ranni’s quest line until they retrieve the Death Curse Mark from the top of the Liurna Divine Tower (again, this requires the inverted statue acquired by recovering the Fingerslayer Blade for Ranni).
After acquiring the Curse Mark of Death, a change occurs in the Liurna region as the barrier blocking access to Renna’s Rise disappears. This allows players to climb Renna’s Rise and gain access to both the Snow Witch set (Rannis Outfit) and a gate. Using this gate allows players to access an area known as the Ainsel River Main. A Ranni Doll can be found here along with a Place of Grace, so players should grab the doll and then rest at the Place of Grace.
In this place of grace, players can now attempt to speak to the Ranni doll. If you do this three times, Ranni will reveal herself after possessing the doll and task the player with killing the ominous shadow. This enemy is further in the area behind the Nokstella Waterfall Basin Site of Grace, near two coffins. This enemy fights much the same as Blaidd the Half-Wolf, but has a greatsword imbued with Destined Death rather than Frost.
If you talk to Ranni about the puppet, she will reward the player with the discarded palace key and clean up the puppet.
How to get the Dark Moon Ring
After finding the discarded palace key, players must go to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library, the same location where Rennala of the Full Moon is fought. Players will likely have noticed the locked chest near the Site of Mercy, and that’s what the Discarded Palace Key is for. Open the chest to get the Dark Moon Ring, a gift that Ranni is supposed to give to her consort.
What does the Dark Moon Ring do?
The Dark Moon Ring is required to complete Ranni’s questline, although players still have to jump through a few hoops before reaching the location where it can be used. Players must return to the Ainsel River and seek out the Sea of Rot. On the other side of the Sea of Rot is the Great Cloister, where interacting with a large coffin in the Rot allows players to climb inside and travel even further.
In the new area that the coffin takes players to is the boss called Astel, Naturalborn of the Void. Defeat this boss to open a new path leading to a previously inaccessible part of Liurna known as the Moonlight Altar. On the journey to the Cathedral of Manus Seres, located in this new area and guarded by Glintstone Dragon Adula, players can find a hole in the ground near a Site of Mercy that leads to the scene of a battle.
Players can interact with Ranni here to put the ring on her finger, complete her questline, and earn the Dark Moon Greatsword (the latest version of FromSoftware’s returning weapon, the Moonlight Greatsword).
