Canada is a popular travel destination for Nigerians due to the various economic opportunities and sectors that the country offers Nigerian professionals such as; B. the oil and gas sector, the information and communication technology sector, the health sector and other scientific and technical fields. Hence, it is not surprising to learn that most Nigerians come to Canada as skilled workers below the business class.

Nigerians are typically well qualified for Canadian immigration programs because of their proficiency in English, their level of education, and their work experience. Two popular ways for Nigerians to immigrate to Canada are through the Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Provincial Nominee Program.

Federal skilled worker program

The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) may be a good option for you if you are an overseas Nigerian immigrant candidate. The FSWP allows applicants with work experience and no connection to Canada or a job offer to apply for permanent residency.

To qualify for the FSWP, candidates must be able to use their foreign work experience, education, language skills, and other human capital factors to settle in Canada. Applicants must meet the following requirements in particular:

  • One year of continuous full-time or equivalent paid work experience within the last 10 years in a qualifying occupation classified under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) skill level 0, A or B;
  • Validated language proficiency equivalent to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in English or French for all abilities (reading, writing, listening and speaking); and
  • Canadian proof of education (certificate, diploma or degree) or foreign proof of education and ECA (Educational Credential Assessment) report.
  • Score at least 67 on the six IRCC immigration selection factors.
  • Prove you have enough money to settle yourself and your family in Canada.

The FSWP is one of three programs administered under Express Entry, the Canadian government’s application management system. Once you know you are eligible for the FSWP, you can upload your Express Entry Profile to the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.

Candidates are then given a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on factors such as age, education, work experience, language skills and more. Every two weeks, IRCC sends out permanent residency invitations to the highest-scoring candidates in the pool.

The goal is to have 110,000 permanent residents admitted via Express Entry by 2024. Therefore, express entry is perhaps the most attractive and quickest option for economy class candidates to obtain permanent residency in Canada.

Provincial Nominee Program

The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is another great option for Nigerian immigrant candidates. The majority of Canada’s provinces and territories administer the PNP, which allows each province and territory to design its own immigration routes based on its own economic and demographic needs. Through the PNP, provinces and territories nominate qualified labor candidates for immigration into their respective jurisdictions.

Nigerian immigrant candidates may be able to apply to enter Canada directly through a PNP provided they meet the eligibility criteria. They may also be included in the Express Entry Pool and invited to apply for a nomination by a province that selects candidates from the federal pool. If they are nominated through Express Entry, they will receive an additional 600 CRS points, meaning they are effectively guaranteed an invitation to apply for permanent residency in an upcoming Express Entry drawing.
