How to unlock Trial of Honor

The second quest in The Companion storyline, Proving Honor, begins after you complete it Take up arms and a radiant quest for the companions. You can use the Miscellaneous quest “Talk to the Companions Executives for Work” if you have difficulties finding the right contacts.


You will be redirected Skjor after completing the Radiant quest to begin Proving Honor. He will explain that the task is to obtain a Fragment of Wuuthrad and what the duty means to you. He will tell you too Talk to Farkas for the rest of the details.

Farkas brings more explanation before you set off, although he does ask an important question; Do you want to Go together to Dustman’s Cairn where the artifact is or rather meet him there? Essentially you want do the search now or meet him when you’re ready? Either way, you’ll get out on the plain northwest of Whiterun to continue the search.

Farkas will Replace your active companion while he follows you and offers none of the benefits.

Clearing of Dustman’s Cairn

There’s a whole dungeon between you and the Fragment of Wuuthrad, although it’s nothing you haven’t seen before. First it will be you encounter with draugr. The undead fighters will put up some resistance, but with Farkas by your side won’t be much of a challenge.

It gets a bit interesting later when you enter a large, round cave with a locked door. Look for a lever in a recessed room on the Left side of the caverelative to the stairway leading in. you will find a handful of potions in the room, which is an added bonus. This will get you locked up.

In an attempt to get you out, Farkas is ambushed by a group of werewolf-hunting bandits who are summoned the silver hand and turns into a werewolf to defend himself. From here the dungeon changes from fighting Draugr to fighting Silver Hand. It’s not a particularly significant change in difficulty, although it does add some variety to the dungeon.

Try to loot as many Silver Hands as you can. Her silver weapons fetch a good price, and your Disease potions are a handy way to heal yourself from diseases without having to go to a shrine to pray.

After several rooms from Silver Hand, you’ll start fighting Skeevers and Frostbite Spiders before returning to Dragur. At this point you will come across a locked door in an empty room. To open it, search for the first chest on the left side of the room relative to the entrance for the key. Right after that is the last room and the fragment of Wuuthrad. Take some time to prepare before picking it up. Waves of Draugr will attack you immediately afterward.

Remember to grab your treasure at the end of the dungeon. Except for the word wall, which contains a word from the fire breath scream, there is a chest on the left that’s full of leveled booty.

After the attack ends, you can find the exit up the stairs to the left of the word wall, and in a coffin. It will act as a shortcut to reach you back to the entrance and faster out of Dustmain’s Cairn.

Complete Prove Honor

The quest ends with you Return to Jorrvaskr. This time, Kodlak himself calls a ceremony that officially inducts you into the Companions and makes you one a full member of the association. It’s a brief moment in which Farkas confirms that your actions in Dustman’s Cairn have qualified you to join their ranks.

Once it’s complete, you have opportunity to ask questions about what you saw in the cave and why Farkas is a werewolf. Such a revelation is not to be taken lightly and will return in later quests. If you want to fully understand what’s happening, be sure to talk to Kodlak.

Otherwise, you will have to spend some time doing ordinary jobs The leaders of the companions. It won’t be long before you can jump into the next phase of the faction’s story.
