How to keep track of Trump’s legal issues

Consider the latest developments regarding his business relationships:

  • Trump’s business — CNN reported Wednesday that former Trump Organization finance chief Allen Weisselberg is expected to plead guilty to 15 years of tax fraud Serve scheme and jail time. But Weisselberg will not cooperate with authorities against Trump, although he could testify whether Trump or his adult children will ever be charged. Read CNN’s full report.

Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election have sparked their own subset of legal issues, one of which was widely displayed in Atlanta on Wednesday.

  • Georgia election results 2020 – His former attorney, Rudy Giuliani, faced a grand jury conducting investigations on Wednesday Trump’s attempt to find votes and overturn Georgia 2020 election results. Giuliani was described by CNN’s reporter as defiant and confident. This investigation is being conducted by the Fulton County District Attorney. Continue reading.

These developments add to what we learned earlier this month.

  • Election 2020 – While the Fulton County investigation is only focused on Georgia, the US Department of Justice appears to be conducting a larger investigation into January 6, 2021 and the events surrounding the Capitol riot. CNN reported earlier this week that former White House Counsel Eric Herschmann, who was introduced at the Jan. 6 committee hearings, is just the latest Trump White House official to be subpoenaed by a federal grand jury .

I just hope I escape prison

Trump is plotting a path to re-election in 2024, while Giuliani hopes to get out of prison, according to a former spokesman for the latter.

Giuliani’s legal troubles as an accomplice to Trump’s election conspiracy theories and efforts to overturn the 2020 results weigh on the former New York City mayor and US attorney, who knows a thing or two about law enforcement, according to Ken Frydman, Giuliani’s former press secretary.

“He knows he lied for his client, and he knows we all know it,” Frydman said on CNN’s New Day Tuesday, suggesting that Giuliani’s tactic will be to delay trials as much as possible . “I think, you know, at this point in his life his aim is to die a free man.”

Giuliani is among a number of Trump supporters — including Sen. Lindsey Graham and most of the bogus voters — who have been ordered to appear. Both Graham and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp have asked judges to reconsider.
We continue to learn more about how Trump’s allies continued their efforts to overthrow the election. The Washington Post reported this week that attorneys working on Trump’s behalf were attempting to access data from Dominion voting machines in several states Trump had lost, including Michigan, Georgia and Nevada. State authorities have launched investigations into the reasonableness of violations in Michigan and Georgia.
  • Smear for 2020 conspiracy theories — Dominion is in the process of suing Giuliani and another Trump-affiliated attorney, Sidney Powell, for defamation after they and other Trump allies alleged without evidence that the Dominion’s voting systems were somehow involved in election rigging.

These are not political persecutions

When he refused to answer questions from the New York Attorney General, Trump labeled the investigation a “witch hunt,” as he does with all of these separate investigations.

“If your family, your business and everyone around you has become the target of a baseless, politically motivated witch hunt backed by lawyers, prosecutors and the fake news media, you have no choice,” he said in a statement .

He has also portrayed these multiple investigations as the kind of persecution one might find in an autocracy or dictatorship. Russia’s opposition leaders, for example, are routinely jailed.

However, this is a flawed and dangerous comparison as Trump and his legal troubles are the anomaly among all previous presidents and he has not yet been charged with any crimes. If anything, the US justice system seems biased against trying him, at least not without mountains of evidence.

Trump’s power in the GOP is still strong

With Rep. Liz Cheney’s defeat in Wyoming’s GOP primary Tuesday night, it was the “Impeachment 10,” as this CNN interaction calls the House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump in 2021.

Cheney said she will continue her work on the Jan. 6 committee in hopes of uncovering the full truth about efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

And if Trump runs in 2024, she hasn’t ruled out a run of his own to give Republicans a non-Trump option.

According to CNN’s Daniel Dale, Trump’s skewed view of the 2020 election was channeled by a majority of Republican candidates for governor.

He writes: The Republican nominee in at least 21 of this year’s 36 gubernatorial elections is someone who rejected, rejected, doubted or attempted to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election. And the list will almost certainly get longer as the final Republican primary wraps up in the coming weeks.

Who Beat Cheney?

CNN’s Jeff Zeleny was in Wyoming covering the Cheney race and submitted a profile of Harriet Hageman, the former Cheney friend and Trump opponent who later hugged Trump as she fought Cheney.

While Hageman played up her opposition to the Jan. 6 committee at rallies, Zeleny found Republican voters most interested in moving on from 2020 and said they wanted a representative most focused on Wyoming. Read his report.

While it doesn’t appear that the results of 2020 are motivating most Republican voters — that would be the economy — there does seem to be a lot of voter denial on the ballot for November’s midterm elections.
