After the controversial chat reporting system, we didn’t expect Minecraft to have any big surprises in store for players this year. But luckily we now have a completely unexpected new vehicle in the game. Announced at the Minecraft Live 2022 event, rafts are now a part of the game and ready to outdo the boats. So, let’s learn how to build a raft in Minecraft and see how good they really are.
How to Build a Raft in Minecraft (2022)
note: At the moment, the rafts are only available as an experimental feature in Minecraft 1.20 Beta and 22w42a Snapshot. They are still a little far from being complete and are subject to change in the final version.
What is a raft in minecraft
In the real world, a raft is a buoyant structure usually made from long dried bamboo sticks. Minecraft’s iteration of the raft isn’t much different. It is made of bamboo blocks and floats like a boat in the waters of Minecraft. In terms of looks, the raft can be thought of as a long piece of bamboo wood with a shovel-like oar to row it around.
Two players, one player and one mob, or two mobs can easily sit on a raft at the same time. Aside from the boss mobs, it doesn’t matter which mob you try to match, the raft will seat them and allow you to move them around. We were even able to get the Minecraft camels on a raft, but it obviously didn’t look as appealing as the players riding it.
Items required to build a raft
You only need the following few items to craft a raft in Minecraft:
To create a bamboo board, you must Place four pieces of bamboo in a square space in the craft area. You can use this recipe in any corner of the crafting area and it will give the same result. As for bamboo, you’ll find a lot of them in Minecraft’s jungle biomes.
Minecraft raft crafting recipe
The raft crafting recipe is an exact replica of the boat crafting recipe in Minecraft. However, you cannot craft the raft with other types of wood. Follow the steps below to build a raft in Minecraft.
1. First, place a bamboo board in each corner of the top row in the crate area.
2. Next Fill up the middle row of the crafting area with bamboo boards. You can place the planks and create the same pattern with the middle and bottom rows as well. The output will be a raft.
3. Once the raft is ready, you can combine it with a chest in the crafting section. You can now carry items around with you on your journey, but the raft only has room for one player.
How to use raft in Minecraft
Since rafts are like boats, you can push them into the water by stepping inside. Then you have to right click or use the secondary action button to drive on it. Once you’re on the raft, you can Steer and steer the raft with the movement keys. If you don’t want to travel alone, you can push a mob onto the raft for a ride in the back seat.
Boats or Rafts: Which is Better?
While they look cool, the rafts don’t have any practical advantage over the boats. Both have similar speeds, the same ability to reduce fall damage, and even the exact same crafting recipe. Not to mention, you can even add chests to both. All differences between them are visual.
The boats are closed at their edges by a small wooden ledge, but the raft is open on all sides. However, this does not affect the mobs’ ability to reach you or attack you.
So what should you choose in Minecraft – a boat or a raft? Well, the answer to that depends on your personal preference. If you want a variety of colors and a traditional design, you can go for the boat. Meanwhile, if you want something fresh and different, the rafts are the way to go.
