For a hands on learning experiment, have students actually wrap a small rectangular prism using any available paper in both the traditional and diagonal methods. Measure the diameter of the top of the box plus the height of the flat side of the box.

Spread your wrapping paper on the surface and use a heavy object on both ends to hold it flat. It boils down to four easy steps and two pieces. Place your box on the edge of the wrapping paper.

The height of your paper needs to be enough to wrap around the box, plus one to three inches to allow for overlap. Fold one side in and crease, repeat on the other side, then tape the back shut. Line the gift up along the side of the wrapping paper to help you with the measuring process.

Measure and cut the right amount of wrapping paper for your box or gift roll out your wrapping paper—but don’t cut it yet. The first is the width, and the second size is the length. First, measure the circumference of the box and add one to two inches to this amount to determine the length of wrapping paper that you will use.

On the inside of the box, spread your elmer’s glue. Bring the paper up one side and over the top of the box, all the way to the opposite edge. Start at the cut end of the wrapping paper and flip it over 3 times, going in the direction of the rolled paper.

You will want enough paper to just overlap about two inches. Flip your box over, press onto the wrapping paper and let dry. [2] roll the box 3 times in a straight line to measure how much paper you’ll need.

Check whether the sheet is long enough to cover halfway up the sides of the box beforehand. Leave a little extra to create a neat edge. Fold one end of the paper over the bottom of the present.

The metallic colors showed up so beautifully on the dark wrapping paper! Once your box is open, lay it flat on wrapping paper to measure how much you need. Measure the box against the width of your wrapping paper—two depths and two heights—by rolling the box end over end.

Tape the paper to the present. Fold edge of the wrapping paper over, then flip wrapping. Measure wrapping paper to the size of the object, as if you were wrapping the present without a box, leaving extra room at the top and cut.

Fold the bottom edge straight up and crease, this will determine the width of the bag. 2 heights + 2 depths. Place books or other heavier items on the edges of the box if they seem to be lifting up.

Starting on one end fold the paper over until the bottom of the box is completely covered then release. Place the box or gift in the center of the unfurled paper, upside down, so the seams of the paper will end up on the bottom of the package. Measure and cut the paper.

If it doesn’t fit, turn the wrapping paper and measure the other way, against the length. As you flip it, the box will roll onto its side, again onto its back, and one more time onto its other side. Add about an inch for overlap and mark the spot with a little crease.
