For example, a bolt with a diameter of 2 centimeters, 1 millimeter between threads and a length of 25 millimeters would be denoted 2x1x25. This is called the major diameter and will usually be the proper size of the bolt. Measure the outside diameter of the bolt's threads using a vernier caliper, if the bolt is installed in your vehicle or piece of equipment and the bolt's head is not accessible to the vernier caliper. This is represented by the last number in a metric bolt’s designation.
Be sure to measure the threaded (or ridged) area only, starting from near the head. Grab a ruler and lay it along the bolt or screw. The back of your bolt gauge has plastic ridges that can be used to determine the thread of your bolt.
Inch thread sizes are specified by diameter and threads per inch. The poor man’s version of sizing plates and thread checkers are size charts that you can print out at home. This will give you the bolt length.
Measure the female thread with the towers of the bolt gauge or digital caliper: For example a m5x10 bolt has a 5mm shaft diameter and is 10mm long from the bottom of the head to the end of the fastener. If you are measuring imperial bolt thread size, you'll need to record the measurements as thread diameter followed by a hyphen, then the thread per inch measurement.
The important thing here is that you need to print them out at actual size. Measure the distance between the bottom of the bolt head and the opposite end of the bolt using the vernier caliper. Metric fasteners are specified with a thread pitch instead of a thread count.
Head size can vary for the same thread diameter, especially in metric bolts, so even comparing heads to heads you may get an incompatable bolt. There is no other way to measure a bolt. Thread fit categorizes the tolerances between the peaks and valleys (crests and roots) of mating threaded hardware.
For metric bold thread size, the formula is the thread diameter, followed by the x symbol and then the thread pitch number. Diameter is in either inches ( not decimal ) or millimeter. Measure the male thread with the bolt gauge or digital caliper. Coarse pitch threads are preferred and should be used whenever possible, as stated in asme b1.13m.
Measure the length of the bolt from the end of the bolt to the start of the head. The following table of thread sizes for coarse and fine pitch thread was created using the standard sizes from asme b1.13m. The socket the bolt uses does not determine the bolt size!
Do this by measuring one inch of the shaft and counting how many threads (a rise and depth is one thread) are in that inch. Manufacturers specify a bolt's size by indicating its diameter, thread pitch, shank length, grade, head and thread length. Print out size charts for free.
M10 x 100 bolt = 26mm thread or 1/4″unc x 2″ bolt = 3/4″ thread or 1/2″bsw x 5″ bolt = 1″ thread. This measurement will help you match the thread diameter of the nut with the thread diameter of the bolt. In fact, the bolt diameter is a little smaller and the nut diameter a little larger.
