How to organize your Windows 11 Start menu with folders

Windows 10 lets you create and manage folders to house the apps on your Start menu.

This way you can organize your apps and prevent the menu from becoming too cluttered. The original version of Windows 11 lacked this ability.

But now Microsoft has revived this feature for its latest version of Windows.

Windows 11 22H2 Update lets you create, move, and manage folders in the Start menu to better group specific apps.

How to organize your Windows 11 Start Menu with folders

That’s how it works.

First you need to update your Windows 11 PC to the 22H2 version if you haven’t already done so. Go to Settings > Windows Update and then click the button for Check for updates. If the 22H2 update is not yet available for your PC and you still want to install it, visit Microsoft’s download website for Windows 11. Here you can download the update via the Windows 11 installation wizard, via the Windows 11 installation media or get it from an ISO file.

press the beginning button to access the menu. If frequently used apps aren’t in the Start menu, you might want to pin them there first so you can move them to folders. press the All apps button above. Right-click an app you want to pin and click the command for On Home.

Go back to the start menu and look for apps you want to put in a folder. Look for related apps like Microsoft Office programs, web browsers, photo and video editors, or utilities. Drag one icon over another to create a folder.

The following two apps are placed in a folder generically named Folder. Click on the folder to open it. Click in the edit names field and enter a new name for the folder. Then click anywhere outside the folder to close it and confirm the new name.

To add more apps to the folder, drag and drop other related icons onto the folder. Continue in this manner to add more apps to the folder.

Next, look for other apps you want to put in a folder. But here’s a challenge. What if the apps in the Start menu are so far apart that dragging and dropping them on top of each other is too difficult? No problem, not if you can put both of them in the same row. Right click on one of the apps and select it Go forward. This moves the icon to the first position in the top row.

Do the same with any other apps you want to move into the same folder so they are all next to each other on the top row. When you’re done, move the apps on top of each other to create the new folder, then change its name.

Continue this process until you have created the folders you want. Open a folder to view its icons. You can drag and drop the icons to sort them in the order you want. Click once on an app to open it.

When you’re done, drag and drop the folders around the Start menu to position them where you want them. You can right-click and select a folder Go forward to move it to the top row.

Finally, if you decide to remove an app from a folder and place it alone in the Start menu, simply open the folder and drag the icon outward. If you remove all but one app, the folder itself will disappear.
