How to Pin Tabs in Safari on iPhone

Apple introduced tab groups in iOS 15 to make it easier for you to organize tabs in Safari and quickly find them when you need them again. Now, with its latest version – iOS 16 – it adds another useful feature to Safari: the ability to pin tabs to the top of Safari.

As the name suggests, this feature allows you to pin your most visited tabs to the top for even easier access. If Safari is your default browser on your iPhone and you are in the habit of leaving your previously visited tabs open, this feature can come in very handy for you.

How to pin a Safari tab to the top in iOS 16

If there is a website that you visit frequently, you can move it up in Safari like this:

1. Open Safari.
2. Press the tabs button in the bottom right corner to bring up the tabs view with all your open tabs.
3. Tap and hold the tab you want to pin and select it pin tab from the menu. Repeat for as many tabs as you want to pin to the top.

   

Alternatively, you can also pin tabs in Safari using another method like this:

1. Start Safari.
2. Open the tab you want to pin to the top.
3. Touch and hold the address bar and select pin tab from the context menu.
   

After you pin a tab, it appears on top of all other tabs in Safari, so you don’t have to go through all your open tabs or use search to find it. (Pinned tabs are represented by a pin icon).

Another nice aspect of pinning tabs in Safari is that all your pinned tabs will remain pinned to the top, even after you close Safari and later reopen it.

Apple also lets you pin tabs in your tab groups. So if there are sites in this tab group that you visit frequently, you can pin them to the top for easy finding. Any tabs that you pin to the top of a tab group can only be accessed from within that group.

How to access and open pinned tabs in Safari

Accessing pinned tabs in Safari is easy. Go to the top of the page, either by manually scrolling all the way to the top or by tapping the top of the screen, and you’ll find all your pinned tabs there.

To open a pinned tab, just click on it and you should be able to view its contents. When you click a link in a pinned tab, the link opens in a new tab while the original tab remains pinned to the top.

How to close a pinned tab

If you ever want to close a pinned tab in Safari, just touch and hold the tab you want to close, then select it close tab from the pop-up menu.

How to unpin a tab in Safari

If you no longer want a tab pinned to the top of your screen, you can unpin it. To do this, hold down the tab and select release tab from the menu.

Or open the tab you want to unpin, tap and hold the URL bar and select it release tab from the menu.

Pin tabs in Safari to make them more accessible

Safari has long had a search bar to make it easier to find a tab among all the other open tabs. However, with the addition of the pinned tab feature in iOS 16, Apple takes it a step further and makes tab access more convenient.

With this feature, you can now pin your favorite websites, most visited websites, or any other website you want quick access to at the top of Safari and access them anytime with a simple click, saving yourself the steps of finding them.
