September is an exciting time of year, and not just because football is back. As usual, Apple unveiled all of its latest devices at its September event, including the new iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro ranges, as well as the much-anticipated new AirPods Pro with improved noise cancellation. While you’ll have to wait another day for the phones and earbuds, the new Apple Watch lineup is also intriguing this year, with three new models available for pre-order now.

Apple Watch SE
The Apple Watch SE has long been the best value for money in Apple’s lineup, and it only seems to be getting better. The latest version packs the same dual-core processor you’ll find in the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra, which Apple says is 20 percent faster than the previous generation. The SE also offers new features via Watch OS, including Crash Detection, which detects if you’ve been in a serious accident and alerts emergency services, as well as international roaming, so you can easily take the LTE version with you to foreign countries.
The SE retains the classic Apple Watch design, but offers a new case back made from a nylon composite material that shaves some weight. With watchOS 9 you get new orienteering features via the compass app and the latest health and fitness features. And the base price of $249 is lower than the MSRP of the previous model. Apple Watch SE is available in 40mm and 44mm aluminum cases in Midnight, Starlight, and Silver finishes.

The Apple Watch 7 is our current pick for the best smartwatch you can buy. The new Apple Watch 8 ups the ante, but as we’ve seen over the past few years, it’s an incremental update at best. There are some intriguing new features here, and at the top of the list is the new dual sensor temperature, including one on the back and one below the display.
The system is designed in part to help women track menstrual and ovulatory cycles. According to Apple, the data can also be used to track nightly changes in baseline temperature during sleep, which can indicate problems like jet lag or illness. The device offers the same fitness and health tracking features as previous versions, along with new crash detection and international roaming, as well as more accurate cycling tracking capabilities. While the 18-hour battery stays the same, there’s also a new power-saving mode that extends that to 36 hours.

As Detective Riggs might say, “Are you going crazy? Let’s go crazy!” The new Watch Ultra seems primed for the ultimate adventurers out there. The all-new titanium case surrounds the sapphire crystal display for serious protection against the elements. The watch is designed to withstand blistering heat, bitter cold, and even the depths of the ocean, with twice the depth certification of previous Apple Watches.
The Apple 2000 Nit display is said to be twice as bright as all previous Apple Watches and includes a new night mode. The new action button is customizable to track workouts, compass waypoints and more. Two speakers and three microphones aim for better sound in difficult environments, and three new robust straps have been designed to keep the watch on the wrist in almost any scenario. Apple has even partnered with Huish Outdoors for scuba tracking to make it easier to access important data underwater. The Ultra is bigger, brighter and more powerful than any Apple Watch before it.
