How to qualify for modern pentathlon at Paris 2024. The Olympics qualification system explained

Modern pentathlon has been part of the Olympic program since Stockholm 1912. The women’s competition was added before Sydney 2000.

The sport is based on the principle of the complete athlete, proficient in a series of five disciplines.

Everything starts with fencing. Then the athletes compete 200 m freestyle swimming. The third event of the day is horse jumping. Finally, that combined eventconstantly and laser shootingalso called laser run, ends the competition.

The best athletes in each discipline earn points and have priority at the start of the next event until the last combined event determines the podium.

The modern pentathlon competition Paris 2024 will take place from August 8th to 11th, 2024 at the Palace of Versailles and the Arena Paris Nord.

Paris 2024 will have the same number of athletes as Tokyo 2020: 72 (36 for women and 36 for men). Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) can qualify a maximum of two athletes by gender, for a total of four.

How many athletes will compete?

A total of 72 athletes will compete in the Modern Pentathlon of Paris 2024, 36 women and 36 men. It’s the same number of athletes as Tokyo 2020.

Each NOK can qualify four athletes for the Games – two men and two women. Places are allocated to athletes by name, however NOCs with more than two pentathletes per gender can decide which two will compete in the Games.

What is the qualification route for the modern pentathlon to Paris 2024?

There will be a total of 36 quota places for both the men’s and women’s competitions, with 33 being distributed through competitions, one host country quota place and two universality places.

qualification events

UIPM (International Union of Modern Pentathlon) World Cup Finals 2023

A quota place.

  • If a continental competition is held before the 2023 UIPM World Cup Finals, the cup will take precedence. Therefore, the continental quota place goes to the best athlete ranked in the tournament other than the one or who received the quota place at the UIPM World Cup 2023.

Continental Championships – between January 1st and December 31st, 2023

20 quota places.

  • Africa: a quota place

  • Pan America: five quota places (maximum one per NOC): 1st place, whether from NORCECA or South America, 2 highest places NORCECA, 2 highest places South America

  • Asia: five quota places (maximum one per NOC)

  • Europe: eight quota places (maximum one per NOC)

  • Oceania: a quota place

UIPM World Championships 2023 (Bath, England)

Three quota places.

  • If the top three ranked athletes have already achieved the quota place through the UIPM World Cup Finals 2023 or the respective Continental Championships, the quota place will be awarded to the best athlete who is placed in the UIPM ranking list of June 17, 2024 and who has not yet qualified Has.

UIPM World Championships 2024 (place open)

Three quota places.

  • If the top three ranked athletes have already received a place through the 2023 UIPM World Cup Finals, 2023 UIPM World Championships or respective Continental Championships, the quota place will be awarded to the top ranked athlete in the UIPM Rankings as of June 17, 2024, not yet qualified.

Olympic ranking

Six quota places will be awarded to pentathletes who have not yet won a quota place from the above qualifying events. The distribution is based on the highest rank in the UIPM Olympic Rankings dated June 17, 2024

Ranking is based on athletes’ performance in competitions between June 17, 2023 and June 17, 2024 such as: Pan American Games in Santiago 2023 for America.

Host country quota place

France is entitled to one quota place per gender if no French athlete has already qualified.

If an athlete from France has already qualified, the highest ranked athlete in the UIPM Olympic Rankings as of June 17, 2024 who has not yet qualified will secure a place in Paris 2024.

Universal Places

In October 2023, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will invite all NOCs to submit their applications to fill the two quota places (for each gender) available on the principle of universality.

A tripartite commission will write down the filling of these universality slots for the relevant NOCs after the end of the qualification period for the modern pentathlon in Paris 2024.

Athletes to Watch Heading to Paris 2024

Athletes from Great Britain topped the podium in both the women’s and men’s competitions at Tokyo 2020 Kate French and Joe Choong win gold.

Choong has had an excellent 2022 season and is currently leading the world rankings. With the exception of Rio 2016, British women have won medals at every edition of the Games since the women’s competition was included in the Olympic program and will be aiming for gold again in the French capital.

Both for men Valentine Prades and Christopher Patte will seek glory on home soil should they qualify for the games.

keep an eye out Michelle Gülyas, which is currently number one in the world rankings. Also pay attention to Italy Elena Michele Who is second in the world rankings and France Elodie Clouvel who is third and will be keen to impress on home soil.

  • 2023 (TBC): UIPM World Pentathlon Championships 2023;
  • 2023: Continental Championships;
  • 2024: UIPM World Championship Series 2024;
  • 2024 (TBC): UIPM World Pentathlon Championships 2024;
  • June 17, 2024: UIPM Olympic Pentathlon World Ranking List published;
  • 18 June 2024: UIPM informs NOCs/National Associations of their allocated quota places;
  • 24 June 2024: NOCs confirm the use of the allocated quota places to the UIPM;
  • June 25, 2024: UIPM to confirm reallocation of all unused quota places;
  • July 1, 2024: NOKs to confirm the use of the allocated quota places;
  • July 8, 2024: registration deadline for Paris 2024;
  • July 26 – August 11, 2024: Paris 2024 Olympic Games;
  • 8th-11th August 2024: Olympic competitions in modern pentathlon in Paris 2024.
