How To Ride A Pig

Minecraft’s Open World features a variety of mobs for players to interact with. Most passive mobs will drop food that can be consumed to keep them hungry, but some of these mobs also have additional functions, including being used as a mount to move from one point to another.

Currently, players can ride all types of in-game horses and their variants, Striders, which can be found in Lava Lakes in the Nether, Llamas, which can be found in some mountainous Overworld biomes, and Pigs, which are fairly common mobs in the Overworld. So players can ride pigs Minecraftas this requires some important tools.

How to ride a pig in Minecraft

Pigs are not typical mounts in Minecraft. First, they will not be able to compete with horses in terms of cost efficiency and speed. The max speed of horses is almost twice that of pigs according to Minecraft Wiki, so choosing to ride a pig is a bit inefficient and weird, usually as a novelty.

Still, it’s a cool experience that requires two key items for players to get their hands on: a saddle and a carrot on a stick. Without these items it is impossible to ride a pig in vanilla Minecraft.

Find a saddle

Saddles will be the hard part of pig riding Minecraft because saddles cannot currently be crafted by the player. Saddles instead count as some valuable loot that can be found in various locations in Minecraft’s World.

First, players can go to a village and approach a leatherworking villager and trade a saddle with them. They have a 50/50 chance of selling one once they are a master level trader and it may take players some time to level up the villager.

Another option is fishing. One of the potential loot options for fishing is to find a saddle, although players must ensure they are fishing in a location where they can find treasure loot. This means that AFK fish farms with a water block are not eligible to get a saddle.

The main way to get a saddle, which all players will most likely choose, is to get it through structure loot or mob drops. A select few mobs will drop a saddle (Ravagers, Striders with Zombified Piglins, etc.). Some locations also have a high chance of dropping a chest containing a Saddle, including Villages, Dungeons, Netherholds, Desert Temples, Jungle Temples, Bastion Remnants, End Cities, and Strongholds. Desert Temples, Dungeons, and Nether Fortresses have the highest chance of dropping a saddle.

With such a wide variety of locations to search through, players will eventually stumble upon a saddle without too much effort.

Make a carrot on a stick

Once players have a saddle ready, they only need one item before approaching a pig. To actually control the pig, players must craft a carrot on a stick. Simply combine a Fishing Rod with a Carrot in the crafting grid to get one.

Fishing Poles can be crafted using three sticks and two pieces of line, and can also be found as loot in ocean ruins protected by drowned mobs. Carrots can often be found in villages on farms, in shipwreck chests, or even dropped by zombies. Scavenger outposts also have a chance to spawn carrots within them. So if players come across one, be sure to check it out.

Find a pig and ride it

With a saddle and a carrot on a stick, players just need to find a pig. These are common passive mobs that can be found almost anywhere in the world, so this task shouldn’t be too difficult or time-consuming.

Saddle the pig and, with the carrot on a stick in hand, players can guide it in the direction the carrot is pointing. It is also possible to make the pig faster when players use the carrot on a stick by pressing the use key, typically M2 for mouse and keyboard users. Keep in mind that this speed boost will take away a bit of a stick’s durability.

Minecraft is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS and many other devices.
