How to Transfer an Amazon Gift Card Balance

Amazon gift cards can refer to either physical gift cards or eGift cards received via SMS or email. These gift cards can be redeemed in your Amazon account and used as a payment method in the Amazon online store.

In this article, we’ll cover whether or not you can transfer your gift card balance and what to do if you’ve already redeemed your Amazon gift card.

Can I transfer my Amazon gift card balance?

The short answer is no, you cannot transfer your Amazon gift card balance. Amazon’s Terms of Service contain several prohibited activities that severely restrict what individuals can do with their gift cards, including:

  1. Transferring a gift card balance to another Amazon account once the claim code was redeemed.
  2. Transferring the balance of a gift card to a debit card or credit card (such as Mastercard or Visa).
  3. Using the balance on a gift card to withdraw funds to a bank account.
  4. Transferring a gift card balance to your PayPal account, Amazon Pay balance, Cash App or other online payment service.
  5. Using the gift card to purchase another gift card.
  6. Using the Amazon gift card for payout (except in specific cases where required by law).
  7. Transferring the Gift Card to another country.

The only way to transfer your Amazon gift card or gift card balance to another account is to contact customer service. However, since Amazon specifically warns users to check which account they are logged into when redeeming their gift card, they are unlikely to reverse the redemption and allow redemption on a separate account.

Note: If you haven’t redeemed your gift card yet, you may be able to redeem it on a different account (if it’s not linked to the original account).

How to transfer Amazon gift card balance

As mentioned above, the only way to transfer money from an Amazon gift card balance is to have the redemption canceled by Amazon’s customer service team. This essentially resets the card information so you can load it into a different account with a new gift card code.

To contact Amazon Customer Support:

  1. Open the Amazon website and log into your account.
  2. press the three horizontal lines on the left side of the screen.
  1. Scroll down and click Customer service.
  1. click Payments, Fees, Bills and Gift Cards.
  1. click gift cards.
  1. click Applied to the wrong account.
  1. click i need more help.
  1. Either request a call by clicking Request a call now or chat with a customer service agent online by selecting Start chatting now.

Note: It is highly unlikely that Amazon will honor your request to cancel a redemption. However, as an exception to their policy, they can choose to reverse it. This varies from case to case, but since it’s your only chance to get the gift card back, it’s worth a try. Also note that this is only possible if the balance of the gift card remains unaffected. If part of the gift card balance has been spent, the card cannot be returned under any circumstances.

How to exchange an Amazon gift card for cash

If contacting Amazon customer service isn’t working for you, you may need to resort to more creative methods.

If you haven’t redeemed your gift card yet, it’s possible to sell the gift card through social media and online marketplace platforms like Reddit or Craigslist. Likewise, people are often open to gift card exchanges, where you can exchange one gift card for another. However, be careful when doing this as many people will try to scam you and it is against Amazon’s Terms of Service.

One last thing to consider is offering your friends or family to buy a few items on Amazon for cash. That way, your friends get the items they were going to buy anyway, and you get cash to use however you like.

While gift cards are often thought of as a simple gift option, they almost always come with fine print that reduces their usefulness. Amazon eGift cards have no expiration date, can be scheduled to arrive on any delivery date, and are easily redeemed with the gift card number. After that, however, the gift card funds can only be used in the Amazon store and you cannot transfer the funds to another account.

Unfortunately, transferring your Amazon gift card balance is not possible. However, if you’re lucky, you might be able to redeem the card on a different account.
