How to Turn Off Silent Mode on an iPhone

  • iPhone Silent Mode mutes ringtones and notifications when you want your phone to be quiet.
  • Disable Silent mode by flipping the Ring/Silent switch on the side of the phone so you can’t see the orange band.
  • If you also want to turn off haptic feedback in Silent mode, turn it off in the Settings app in the Sound & Haptics section.

Your iPhone’s sleep mode is a great tool for silencing the seemingly endless stream of notifications that pour in throughout the day – great for meetings, dinners, and other occasions when you need a break from notifications.

However, it’s entirely possible that you accidentally entered silent mode and don’t know how to get out of it. Here’s everything you need to know about turning off silent mode on your iPhone and controlling whether your phone gives you haptic feedback while it’s silent.

How to turn off silent mode on an iPhone

Typically, silent mode turns off all ringtones and notifications, so your phone won’t notify you of phone calls or text messages in this setting. Some third-party apps will also mute themselves when your phone is in silent mode, although most music and video files will generally continue to play normally. Even in silent mode, YouTube videos, for example, still play as you would expect.

Your iPhone makes it very easy to toggle silent mode: it’s controlled by the Ring/Silent switch on the side of your phone. To turn off sleep mode, Slide the Ring/Silent switch up so you can no longer see the orange band at the top of the switch.

How to disable haptics in silent mode on your iPhone

When silent mode is on, you won’t be distracted by audible alerts, but you may still feel your phone vibrate when a notification arrives. That can be a handy feature, allowing your phone to discreetly notify you even when you’re trying to reduce distractions. If you want your phone to go completely silent without actually turning it off, you can turn off haptic feedback in Silent mode.

To do this, start the settings app and tap sound & feel. In which Ring/Silent mode switch section, turn off Play Haptics in silent mode by swiping the button to the left.
