How to use Gekko’s Wingman to plant and defuse the spike

Look at the little guy.

Valorant’s 22nd Agent Gekko is a versatile initiator with abilities that come in handy in many situations.

However, his wingman ability has caught the attention of the Valorant community. One of its main functions is to place and defuse the spike, a new mechanic for an ability introduced to the game.

Before Gekko joined the Valorant roster, players had to risk their bodies each round to plant or defuse the Spike. Wingman gives teams a better chance of successfully attacking and planting locations, as well as performing replays and defuses.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new initiator ability that’s taken Valorant by storm.

Always remember to have the spike in your inventory. Approach a Spike location with your team. Once you have the location line of the designated area to plant the spike, simply equip the ability and press alt-fire.

You’ll know he can plant the spike once you see an outline of him on the website before activating the ability. Even if you stand on high ground, he gets the plant. Just keep in mind that the ability’s trajectories aren’t that great.

When Valorant streamer Tarik “Tarik” Celik tried to plant the Spike from Kitchen to B-Site’s top nest on Icebox, the little Spike-carrier ran all the way around Mid and into Tube to get the plant .

Brave commentator Tom “Tombizz” Bissmire also showed that the ability can go through Sage’s Barrier Orb wall and Cypher’s Trapwires if you command him to spike.

Players can also have Wingman plant the spike through smoke. However, the little guy only has 100 hp, making him an easy target when moving to location and planting. If he drops the spike, your team must retrieve it.

How to defuse the spike with Wingman?

It works the same as planting the ear of corn. Equip Wingman and Alternate Fire to make him run towards the Spike and defuse it.

If he defuses the spike, your team can search for the attackers holding the site.

If he’s halfway through the defuse and gets knocked down, the spike stays half-defuse. If Wingman completes the defuse, Gekko gets an ultimate point.

Be careful when sending him off as other agent abilities can trip him up or prevent him from defusing.

For example, Astra’s gravity well can prevent him from defusing the spike. It will also die to post Molly’s and other damaging abilities.

Gekko was added to the Valorant roster in patch 6.04. Players can unlock him by earning 60,000 XP after activating his agent contract, or they could spend 1,000 VP.
