How to use Skill Based Passing for every pass type

To come out on top this year, you’ll need to get Madden 23 spot on, which is why we’ve put together a guide for you.

It’s not very complicated, but there are a few things you should know to perform well, especially since there are three types.

Let’s take a look at each of these options and discuss what you need to know.

Madden 23 Passing Guide

Before we dive deep into all of the different types of Madden 23 passing types that exist and how to use them effectively, you need to become familiar with the controls.

There have been a few updates and changes to the pass controls, including the freeform mechanic when you select it when you first launch the game.

MATCHING CONTROLS: Pay close attention to the Freeform modifier above

As you can see, if you have the Madden 23 Passing Controls placement type selected, the L2 trigger is used for free-form passing.

Here are the default controls for passing Madden 23 on PS5:

  • Recipient 1 – X
  • Receiver 2 – O
  • Receiver 3 – square
  • Receiver 4 – triangle
  • Receiver 5 – R1
  • Scramble – LS+R2
  • Free Form (Placement) – L2
  • Low Pass (Classic) – L2
  • High Pass Modifier – L1
  • Playmaker – RS
  • Throw Ball – Click on R3
  • Pump Fake (Double Tap) – R1, Triangle, Square, O, X

If you stuck with Classic, the L2 trigger is used to initiate a low pass and you don’t have to worry about it very much.

Now let’s take a closer look at this passing mechanic.

Classic Madden 23 Passing Guide

Though easy, getting through the Classic version of Madden 23 is still a viable option, but you’ll give up a lot of control.

If you’ve played Madden 22, you probably remember that you can use the left stick to take the lead. This gives you a little more control than just pressing the icon of the receiver you want to throw at.

PASS LEAD: Use LS to lead the ball slightly in front of or behind your receiver

The main problem with using Classic is that with all the new defensive controls in play, it could lead to more pass abandonments and interceptions.

Because of this, we believe using Free Form Placement and Skill-Based Passing will be the best option when it comes to passing in Madden 23.

Free Form (Placement) Madden 23 Passing

The easiest way to determine exactly where you want to place the ball is to use the Freeform setting in your Madden 23 Pass Controls.

Essentially you use the L2 trigger to create an area outside the shaded zone and you can place the ball there and hold the icon to determine the strength of the pass (ball, touch, lob).

FREE PASSING: Complete passes in tight time slots with Free Form Passing

You have to be careful when using Madden 23 freeform passing as you are more likely to throw an incomplete pass or an interception.

The best way to get used to this feature is to go to the Skills Trainers to practice passing and complete the tutorials.
