Erling Haaland and Manuel Akanji are getting ready to take on former club Borussia Dortmund for the first time when Manchester City host the Bundesliga powers in a UEFA Champions League group stage clash at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

Haaland joined City from BVB this summer, while Akanji arrived at the end of the transfer window to join former Dortmund star Ilkay Gundogan in Manchester.

There is also a connection the other way around when USMNT attacked Giovanni Reyna’s father. Claudio played for Man City.

Premier League games were postponed over the weekend as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II and Man City are still unsure if that game will go ahead on Wednesday.

If it goes ahead look for an emotionally charged game that will help dictate the front of a very difficult group which also features Sevilla and Copenhagen. These teams meet on Wednesday at 15:00 ET in Denmark.

Important storylines

It doesn’t get more crucial: one of Manchester City, Sevilla or Dortmund will not reach the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League. With Dortmund yet to take on Sevilla, a Man City win on Wednesday would ensure a comfortable enough 2-0 start to the group stage, followed by a pair against Copenhagen and a guarantee that Sevilla and/or BVB would drop more points will.

Guardiola is not the apple of Dortmund’s eye after his stint at heated rivals Bayern Munich, and the trio of Dortmund players at City are unlikely to make him any more popular in Germany (although that game is set for the Etihad’s more leisurely confines of course).

Head-to-head record between Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund

Man City won both games in the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, while Dortmund took four points from six in the 2012/13 group stage.

The facts about Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund’s terrific start to the season stretched into UCL matchday one when Giovanni Reyna set up two of BVB’s three goals in a clean sheet win over Copenhagen, but the weekend proved too severe a test against a battered and ready RB Leipzig. Dortmund’s 12 points from six games are level with Bayern Munich, Hoffenheim and Freiburg. Union Berlin can join BVB or lead the quartet by two points depending on the result on Sunday morning against Cologne.

Manchester City squad news, injuries, line-up options
