“Politics and science are the worst of friends.” That sums up the plot of pretty well MK Ultra, the latest psychological thriller based on the CIA’s Project MK Ultra program from the 1960s. The plot follows a brilliant psychiatrist, Ford Strauss, who becomes embroiled in a dangerous government experiment involving brainwashing and the use of psychedelic and other mind-controlling substances on American citizens. Formerly known as Midnight Climax, MK Ultra is written and directed by the filmmaker Joseph Sorrentinowho is best known for his earlier projects The Sacrament of Life, coyoteand George’s mother. Sorrentino also serves as the film’s producer Lee Broda, Brian Mercer, Andrew Schilling, Jerry Tankersleyand Seth Willenson.

There is no official update on whether MK Ultra will be available on every streaming service at the moment. What is MK Ultra about?
To give you an idea of what MK Ultra is all about, here is a little background to the experiment of the same name. As early as the 1950s, the United States Central Intelligence Agency was working on various methods of interrogation. They ran several such human experimentation programs, including Project Bluebird and Project Artichoke, eventually ending up with their largest project, codenamed Project MK Ultra.
These experiments used brainwashing techniques and drug-induced procedures to determine whether substances such as LSD or psychological torture could weaken individuals and manipulate their behavior. The program used several rigorous methods to alter the subjects’ mental states. It wasn’t until the mid-1970s that this dangerous experiment was publicized and shelved, though even rumors about it inspired works like the original IpPress file. While most of the program’s files and documents were destroyed, as expected, some of them survived and were declassified in 2001.
To date, very few people know the details of the experiment and what exactly happened. The film aims to shed light on these horrifying events of the 1960s using a larger than life setting. Ford Strauss is a psychiatrist extraordinary who is recruited by the government to conduct an experiment at the Mississippi Mental Hospital. But he soon discovers the reality of the project and finds himself caught up in an insidious conspiracy. you could say that MK Ultra is a sort of synopsis of what went down with the project and how it came to light for American citizens.
