Welcome to the Jalopnik Weekend Motorsports Roundup, where we’ll let you know what’s going on in the racing world, how to follow this weekend’s NASCAR and Supercross races, and where you can talk about it, all in one convenient place.

The NASCAR Cup Series Season kicks off in earnest this weekend with its marquee event and first scoring race of the year, the Daytona 500. Hendrick Motorsports proved within reach in qualifying as Alex Bowman passed teammate Kyle Larson to secure his third Daytona 500 pole. A third Hendrick driver, William Byron, was able to push the #24 Camaro into third place in qualifying. However, Byron will not confirm his starting position until after tonight’s Bluegreen Vacations Duels in Daytona.

While the dual qualifying races will determine where the riders will start in the 500, two notable names included in Sunday’s race during qualifying. Seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson made the field in his part-time return to the Cup Series with Legacy Motor Club. Freestyle motocross legend Travis Pastrana also secured his place in the Great American Race for the first time.

The monster energy AMA Supercross The championship resumes this Saturday in Oakland. After five laps, a thrilling title fight ensues between Yamaha’s Eli Tomac, Honda’s Chase Sexton and KTM’s Cooper Webb. Kawasaki’s Jason Anderson, fourth overall, starts out on a six-month probation after an over-aggressive block pass to Gas Gas rider Justin Barcia in Tampa.

Frankie Muniz, star of “Malcolm in the Middle” returns to racing with his full-time ARCA debut at Daytona. Sports car racing fans can watch the Asian Le Mans Series when the championship is held in Abu Dhabi. Is there anything we missed? Let us know in the comments!
