Production on the sequel officially began in 2017, but the mix of live-action and motion-capture elements meant the film took a while to make.

In September 2020, James Cameron announced that Avatar 2 was complete and Avatar 3 was “about 95% complete”. That means fans might not have to wait that long to get back to Pandora.

The director also revealed that part of Avatar 4 has already been filmed. Cameron told Variety: “Anything that needed to be done with a certain actor that we did all the scenes for 2 and 3 together – and a bit of it 4.”
