Who do we meet at Pearl?

Howard (Alistair Sewell) is married to Pearl at the beginning of this film, although he is largely absent due to fighting in World War I. His vacation begs the question of how differently Pearl might have endured her gloomy home life and shattered dreams if he hadn’t been away.

Ruth (Tandy Wright) is Pearl’s German mother with a migration background, who is a devout Catholic and runs her household according to these beliefs. Unfortunately, Pearl doesn’t take well to her mother’s moral code or forms of discipline, pushing Pearl further toward total rebellion.

Matthew Sunderland is Pearl’s father, who is a mute quadriplegic. His main role in the film is a passive one, a nuisance to Pearl that keeps her chained to the farm.

The projectionist (David Corenswet) works at the local movie theater and forms a dangerous friendship with Pearl. He gives in to her thirst to be a movie star, not realizing how bleak her ambition is growing.

Mitzy (Emma Jenkins-Purro), Howard’s sister, turns out to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. She innocently puts herself in a competition against Pearl when she and Pearl attend a dance audition.

Killer origin movies like Pearl

pearl carries a retro, campy style – a palette of cheerful colors that clash harshly yet artistically with the resulting violence. Other films have depicted the growth and birth of real and fictional killers. While the films that follow keep dark tones more in keeping with the actions of their murderous leads, they’re similarly entertaining pearl by holding the lens close to some of the most terrifying people imaginable.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006) – German filmmaker Tom Tykwer directs Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, whose screenplay is based on the 1985 novel by German writer Patrick Süskind. Jean Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw) is a French orphan who grows up with an unnatural sense of smell. His obsession with scent drives him insane when he realizes how fleeting and utterly unique a woman’s scent is. Thus begins Jean-Baptiste’s descent into a murderous madness…using women’s corpses to translate their scent into perfume.

My friend Dahmer (2017) – Marc Meyers directs the biographical horror drama My friend Dahmer, which is largely based on the graphic novel Dahmer’s high school friend John Backderf wrote about the odd nature of the boy who would one day become a serial killer. Jeffrey Dahmer (Ross Lynch) is a socially awkward misfit who, despite his friendship with John Backderf (Alexander Wolff). With his parents’ marriage falling apart, his mother getting sicker, and his own obsession with bones and men worsening, Dahmer turns to killing animals, drinking, and stalking a male jogger. Through flashbacks, the audience understands how Jack, an architect with OCD, unintentionally became a serial killer. Jack’s first murder was the first fuel for a dangerous and dark urge that led him to murder over 60 people. He stores many of their bodies and shapes them in grotesque ways that are nightmares.

Insane (2012) – French director Frank Khalfoun directs the 2012 remake, Insanefrom the 1980 slasher film of the same name. Frank Zito (Elijah Wood) is a schizophrenic man who runs a mannequin restoration business. He processes his childhood trauma by compulsively killing women, collecting their scalps, and attaching their scalps to mannequins. His deadly hobby is threatened when he falls in love with photographer Anna D’Antoni (Nora Arnezeder). Unaware of his murderous addiction, the two engage in a tenuous relationship that forces Frank to face his darkness.
