The original Pinocchio The film was released in 1940 as a drawn animation film based on the 1883 Italian book by Carlo Collodi. The film has been in development since 2015 and there have been some changes in the writing and directing team. The history of Pinocchio tells the story of a puppet maker, Geppetto, who carves a little boy out of wood who miraculously comes to life. Pinocchio wants to be a real boy and through a series of adventures, misadventures and finally good deeds, his wish comes true. Gordon Levitt tells parade that what he loves about the Pinocchio story is that the lesson is about telling the truth. “I love the moral of the story, which is about telling the truth,” he said. “The image of your nose sticking out when you lie is one of the most transcendent images in popular culture, and telling the truth rather than lying is perhaps more important today than it has ever been in history,” he said, the symbolism of Pinocchio’s Strings is something we can all relate to in modern society, although the original story is more than 130 years old. “The protagonist starts out as a puppet. A puppet is someone who simply does what the master says and has no free will of their own,” Gordon-Levitt continued. “To be a real boy you have freedom, you have freedom of choice, you have free will. You are not just a puppet hanging by strings. And of course with free will comes the responsibility to do the right thing.”

While there was never a follow-up story to Disney’s original film, producer Jacqueline Levine said this latest iteration had an ending that was open enough to explore a possible sequel. “Hard to know, I guess we’ll have to see how this one fares,” she said diversity. “Hopefully people love it as much as we do and that’s the start of more episodes. There’s definitely a place for this story, so we’ll see.”
