What is the Laver Cup?

The Laver Cup is the ATP’s answer to the Ryder Cup in golf. This competition sees Europe’s best men’s tennis players compete against players from around the world.

The teams are based on the ATP rankings, with three European players and three world players being selected on the Monday after the French Open concludes. These players are joined by three other players chosen by their team’s respective captains, making there six players on each team. This year the captains of the Laver Cup are Bjorn Borg (Team Europe) and John McEnroe (Team World).

The tournament, which started in 2017, gives fans another opportunity to see some of their favorite players in action and in a completely different competitive environment. This year’s celebrations are taking place at the O2 Arena in London, another sign of the cup’s rising popularity.

What is the Laver Cup format?

The Laver Cup differs significantly from other events on the ATP calendar. For starters, it offers best-of-three phrases. If the match is tied after two sets, the third set becomes a 10-point tiebreak.

The tournament consists of 12 games – nine singles and three doubles. Federer and Nadal will take part in at least one of the doubles matches.

There is also a point system: one point is awarded per match win on day 1, two points are awarded per win on day 2, and three points are awarded per win on day 3. A team must collect 13 points to win the competition.

What is the Laver Cup wallet?

Members of the winning Laver Cup team will receive a whopping $250,000. However, no men’s ATP world ranking points are awarded.
