Kaley Cuoco has certainly established itself as a comedic feat, particularly in the world of television programming. At first she was introduced to most viewers as the polar opposite of her nerdy neighbors The big Bang Theory (2007-2019) and then successfully demonstrated her impressive comedic skills as a voice actress in adult animated film Harley Quinn (2019-2022) and was ultimately able to produce an incredibly balanced mix of dark comedy and genuine dramatic suspense The flight attendant (2020-2022). Saturday night live (2014-2022) Actor Peter Davidson has also understandably become one of the most recognizable figures in the comedy world, becoming a household name thanks to his stint on one of the longest-running sketch comedy shows of all time while also proving his feature film potential The King of Staten Island (2020).
With such success, it seemed almost inevitable that the two would eventually end up in a movie together, and now they’ll be teaming up in a fantastic romantic comedy Get to know Sweet (2022). Not to be confused with the 2017 SNL Digital Short of the same name, which stars Davidson and Kristen Stewart (spencer), Get to know Sweet follows Cuoco as Sheila, a native New Yorker who stumbles upon a unique tanning bed that can send her back in time. Though such a concept offers seemingly limitless possibilities, Sheila instead embarks on a more personal, time-consuming journey to reconnect with her soulmate, Gary, played by Davidson. Sheila believes she has been given an incredible opportunity not only to reignite the dying flame of love for Gary, but she also believes she can even improve upon him and make him the perfect companion, despite a warning from the tanning bed’s owner, June (Deborah S Craig) that changing characteristics of the past could have serious consequences for the future.
It’s another entry into the surprisingly packed genre of the Time Loop Love Story, a collection of films that historically never get old (literally). What has come of age is the way we, as viewers, see feature films. Where we used to have to go to the theater for anything that lasted 90 minutes or more, things in the world of streaming have now become both simpler and more complicated. It can occasionally be difficult to decipher whether a film is going exclusively in a cinema, when it’s going exclusively via streaming, or in some cases both.

What is Meet Cute about?
The official synopsis for Get to know Sweet reads as follows:
When Sheila (Kaley Cuoco) and Gary (Pete Davidson) meet, it’s love at first sight – until we realize their magical date wasn’t destiny at all. Sheila has a time machine and they fall in love all over again. But when the perfect night is never enough, Sheila travels into Gary’s past to transform him into the perfect man.
The official trailer too Get to know Sweet mainly shows how Sheila has a few dates with Gary to make it work so their future relationship will be absolutely perfect. Cuoco and Davidson are able to show incredible chemistry between each other, and the trailer isn’t afraid to dive into the dark comedy either. Examples include Sheila running over the past version of herself so she doesn’t interfere with her master plan, and a joke by Gary asking the obvious time travel question; Why not just go back in time and kill Hitler?

Groundhog Day (1993) – Perhaps the undisputed king of time warp rom-coms, Groundhog Day depicts a grumpy, selfish weatherman named Phil (Bill Murray) who is forced to report over and over again in the same day. At first, Phil used the time warp for his own selfish reasons, but eventually learned to use this gift for a nobler purpose of helping others, even finding true love in the process. Groundhog Day was perhaps the first pop culture sensation to truly engage with this high-profile concept, but it still remains a timeless classic, often the subject of comparison whenever a similar concept makes its way into film.
PalmSprings (2020) – The unique hook of PalmSprings is that not just one person is stuck in a time warp, but two (although technically three if you count JK SimmonsCharacter). Here Nyles (Andy Samberg), a man who has been reliving the day of a Palm Springs wedding for an imperceptible amount of time, accidentally drags Sarah (Cristin Millioti) loops with him as she follows him into a mysterious cave that creates the loop. It’s another great feel-good romantic comedy that’s not afraid to get a little experimental, with a scene involving dinosaurs that we still can’t fathom.
Happy death anniversary (2017) – Another time warp scenario, this time with a horror twist. Tree Yellowman (Jessica Rothe) lived the largely normal life of a college student until she was killed by a masked serial killer. After being stabbed by the attacker, Tree wakes up early in the day, forcing her to find a way to survive and break the loop while avoiding a mysterious psychopath who always seems to find her. While it fits well into the horror genre, Happy death anniversary is still pretty confident in his concept and is having a lot of fun with it, thanks in large part to a thoroughly delightful performance by Jessica Rothe.
