2009, Director Jaume Collet-Serra scared the whole world with his masterful horror film Orphaned. The film tells the story of a sweet young girl named Esther who is taken to a loving home and offers unexpected twists when we realize that this adorable child is not at all what she seems. It’s safe to say that this movie made us all distrust everything and everyone. Almost 13 years later, we finally get a glimpse into Esther’s life before she met the Colemans and the evil that has long lain within her. Though it’s been over a decade, audiences are more than excited to learn the haunting details of her origins in the prequel film Orphan: First kill.

Orphan: First kill will have a limited theatrical run on Paramount on August 19th. You can check Fandango to see if a cinema near you is showing the film.

Will Orphan: First Kill stream the same day as in theaters?

Orphan: First kill will be released for streaming on the same day as its limited theatrical run, as it will be available as an original film on Paramount+. Luckily, you don’t need a Paramount+ subscription if you want to watch the film at home, as the film is also available on-demand. What is the plot of Orphan: First Kill?

The official synopsis on Paramount reads:

“Esther’s terrifying saga continues in this suspenseful prequel to the original and shocking horror hit orphaned. After orchestrating a brilliant escape from an Estonian psychiatric facility, Esther travels to America by posing as the missing daughter of a wealthy family. But it takes an unexpected turn that pits her against a mother who will protect her family from the murderous ‘child’ at all costs.”

A full length trailer for Orphan: First kill was released on July 13. The trailer offers revealing clues as to what made Leena so evil. After escaping the psychiatric facility in Estonia, Leena finds the perfect way to hide in plain sight. She finds her way into the home of the Albrights, who are overjoyed to believe their missing daughter Esther has finally returned. As in the original, the pair soon begin to suspect that she is not what she appears to be. The trailer shows the acting skills of Isabelle Fuhrman, who even after 13 years shows an even greater depth of feeling and rigor than in the original.

Hereditary begins when Annie’s (Colette) mother dies, forcing her to mourn the loss of a woman for whom she had very complicated feelings, while her youngest child begins to display increasingly unstable behavior. In a tale of generational trauma and our inability to mend the ills caused by our parents, Hereditary is a horror film that doesn’t need blood or guts to haunt us. What’s really scary about the film is how easily any family can develop to the level that Annie’s does.
