James Tedesco contract: Sydney Roosters fullback commits until end of 2025

James Tedesco has committed his long-term future with the Sydney Roosters, although he has brushed aside discussions about his contract situation, claiming it’s the last thing on his mind at the start of a new campaign.

He has re-signed to Glamor Club which will most likely mean the Roosters, New South Wales and Australia skipper will end his NRL career in Bondi.

Tedesco has a stellar career record, winning the following awards while with the Roosters:

  • Jack Gibson Medal (5-time winner)
  • Dally M Player of the Year (2019)
  • Dally M Fullback of the Year (2016, 2019, 2022)
  • Dally M Captain of the Year (2021)
  • RLPA Players’ Champion Award (2017, 2019, 2022)

How many years has James Tedesco re-signed with the Roosters?

Tedesco, who was already under contract with the club until the end of the 2024 season, has signed a one-year extension that will accompany him as a rooster until at least 2025.

“I’m proud to lead this club and I’ve enjoyed my career so far here with the Roosters,” he said.

“We are a tight-knit group and I look forward to continuing to work with the team we have here to add to the Roosters’ rich history.

Since joining from the Wests Tigers in late 2017, Tedesco has established himself as the best player in the game on his way to winning two premierships.

He even made history with the Roosters last season by becoming the only player to win the Jack Gibson Medal – awarded to the club’s best player – five times in a row – a record.

“Teddy is our leader and such a big part of our club,” said Trent Robinson.

“He has an incredible work ethic and it’s a real honor to coach him.”

James Tedesco re-signs with the Sydney Roosters

The news was first reported by Phil Rothfield NRL 360 on Monday night, just hours after the Roosters skipper appeared before the media and expressed his desire to remain in Bondi.

The 30-year-old has signed a one-year extension that will keep him at the club until the end of 2025.

Will Joseph Suaalii replace James Tedesco at full-back?

Rumors of Suaalii being set to replace Tedesco in the No. 1 shirt were rife in the opening weeks of the season but that has now been put to one side for the time being.

“I’m happy where I am at the moment,” said Tedesco before extending his contract.

“I’ve been enjoying my career here with the Roosters so far. Of course I want to finish my career here, but there is no rush. I don’t think anyone wants to leave the club. Above all, I want to stay as long as possible.”

The 30-year-old has fulfilled this wish with another extension, which will ultimately extend his time at the club to eight years.

But where is Suaalii?

The Roosters have the best full-back of the moment in Tedesco, who will deny the Samoan international any opportunity to play Sydney’s number one.

Not to mention Joey Manu, who excelled in that position for both the Roosters and the New Zealand national team.

All three were originally set to be out of contract at the end of 2024 but with Tedesco’s re-signing, the club have shown they want Suaalii to bid his time.

Meanwhile, Tedesco allayed any concerns about the couples’ inability to work together by instead explaining how they would help propel the Roosters into a Premiership.

“Having guys like Sua’ali’i and Joey Manu outside of me, not in our spine, is pretty dangerous,” Tedesco said.

“If we can all get together to play for many years I think it will really benefit the club.”
