Kylian Mbappe overlooked by former PSG star after latest dressing room feud
Kylian Mbappe is a constant fixture in the headlines and the latest story involving the Paris Saint-Germain superstar revolves around the captaincy of the Parc des Princes
Former Paris Saint-Germain star Kingsley Coman has endorsed Presnel Kimpembe as the club’s next captain – not Kylian Mbappe.
PSG boss Christophe Galtier raised eyebrows earlier this year when he announced Mbappe was his vice-captain – and Kimpembe took the honour. Kimpembe responded by claiming in a social media post that he was “not made aware of this decision”. Then, in February, Galtier made a U-turn by returning the armband to Kimpembe.
Galtier initially gave Mbappe the vice-captain role after dedicating his future to PSG. The world champions signed a new three-year deal with the Ligue 1 champions last year, a deal that has boosted his influence at Parc des Princes – and his wages – significantly.
Coman, who came through the ranks at PSG before joining Juventus in the summer of 2014, has reignited the captaincy debate by claiming Kimpembe should receive the armband if Marquinhos leaves the club. The Brazil international was named PSG captain in 2020.
PSG meet Coman’s Bayern Munich in the second leg of the Champions League in Germany on Wednesday evening. Bayern won the first leg 1-0 thanks to Coman’s goal in the second half, the Bundesliga champions dominating the game.
“I’m not impartial, it’s the friendship that speaks here, but it would be great to always see Presnel as PSG captain, even if he’s worn the armband many times,” Coman told Canal+, as quoted by RMC Sport . “That would be a source of pride for me.

“Even for PSG’s young players it would be great to see one of us go all the way up to become captain in a team with stars from all over the world buying great players Marqui, Presnel as captain speaks to me more on.”
The PSG vice-captain made headlines after PSG’s 7-0 win over Pays de Cassel in the French Cup in January when Mbappe scored five goals while wearing the armband.
“I have decided that he is the second captain since the start of the season,” Galtier said when asked why Sergio Ramos and Neymar were overlooked. “He deserves to have that armband when Marquinhos isn’t there because he decided to stay.”
Yet Kimpembe, who did not play in that cup game, responded to those quotes on Instagram just hours later. He wrote: “In the last few hours I have been able to hear and read a lot about myself.
“I would therefore like to clarify things to avoid continuing to spread false information in this regard. I was not made aware of this decision, it is completely wrong… Despite this, I will always respect the club’s decisions.”
The saga took another turn when Kimpembe was handed the armband for PSG’s game against Lille last month. Coman’s comments are interesting as he plays alongside Mbappe and Kimpembe at international level. Galtier, or whoever is in charge at PSG when it comes time to choose a new captain, faces a big decision.
