Latest law firm merger brings newcomer to hot Colorado market

  • Quarles & Brady to merge with Adsero IP effective March 1st
  • Foley Hoag and Cozen O’Connor have opened new offices in Colorado in recent weeks

(Reuters) – Quarles & Brady announced on Monday that it will be merging with a small intellectual property law firm in Denver to become the latest law firm to expand into Colorado this month.

Milwaukee-based Quarles will complete its second merger in 2023 when it acquires law firm Adsero IP effective March 1.

Quarles said it will add 12 attorneys, two patent attorneys and 15 businessmen from Adsero, bringing the number of attorneys to approximately 520 attorneys in 12 US offices.

The merger follows Quarles’ recent move to California through a combination with San Diego-based employment and recruitment firm Paul, Plevin, Sullivan & Connaughton on January 1.

Earlier this month, Boston-based Foley Hoag opened an office in Denver with recently hired local staff, and Philadelphia-based Cozen O’Connor hired an intellectual property team to set up an outpost in nearby Boulder. Longtime in the state, Cooley added five private equity partners in Denver last week.

Firms like Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and Buchalter opened in Boulder and Denver respectively last year, and several others opened offices in the region in 2021.

The Mountain West region has also attracted large out-of-town companies to locations such as Salt Lake City, Utah, and more recently Boise, Idaho. Leading law firms in these states and Colorado have spearheaded the growing strength of the region’s technology and life science sectors.

Quarles managing partner and chairman Michael Aldana said in a statement Monday that Denver “has been one of the fastest growing cities in the country,” calling it a hub for telecoms, software, healthcare, life sciences and energy.

Ian Saffer, the current Managing Partner of Adsero, will serve as Managing Partner of Quarles in Denver.
