LIVE: Major road taped off after reports of fatal crash – latest updates

A man died after being hit by a truck Manchester evening news understands.

The A56 Bury New Road is closed in both directions near the B6473 Radcliffe New Road, according to local traffic reports.

Emergency services were brought to the incident, with the North West Ambulance Service confirming that two ambulances were dispatched to the scene just after 1.24pm this afternoon.

A tent was set up at the crime scene.

Greater Manchester Police and Greater Manchester Fire Brigade have been contacted for more information.

In a tweet, Transport for Greater Manchester said: “The A56 Bury New Road/B6473 Radcliffe New Road. Due to a road traffic accident, there are road closures at this intersection.

“Alternative transport routes via M60/M66, Moss Lane or Higher Lane. Expect delays, reschedule your journey.”

According to traffic site INRIX: “Reports of heavy traffic following an accident on the A56 Bury New Road in both directions around the B6473 Radcliffe New Road.”

Statement by GMFRS

A spokesman for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said:

Around 1.30pm this afternoon (Wednesday 15th March) Two fire engines from Whitefield and Broughton Fire Station were called along with Leigh’s Technical Response Unit to reports of a road traffic accident on Radcliffe New Road, Whitefield.

Crews quickly arrived at the scene, where Greater Manchester Police are handling the incident.
