According to a recent Liverpool Echo report, it was mentioned that Liverpool are keeping an eye on Sporting CP’s Matheus Nunes amid stiff competition from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester City.

It is also stated that Jurgen Klopp has quashed claims on other arrivals in this transfer window but the Reds boss may need to return to the transfer market as the squad takes a hit with the growing injury concerns of first-team stars early on Campaign 2022-23.

Nunes’ impressive form in Portuguese football

Nunes had a solid campaign with the Portuguese team as he put in some impressive performances in the central areas of the field. He scored four goals and provided five assists in 50 appearances for the Portuguese giants in all competitions last season.

The Rio de Janeiro-born talent has had a good record as he has consistently displayed in Liga Portugal averaging 1.3 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 0.6 shots, 0.7 key passes and 2.5 dribbles per game . He was also good at distributing the ball from midfield, having completed 85.8% of his pass attempts in the Portuguese premier league (statistics via whoscored).

Should the Liverpool boss look to the transfer market for solutions?

Liverpool were dealt a major blow earlier this season when Thiago Alcantara suffered an injury setback with Joel Matip after he was also admitted to the treatment room with a groin injury. The Reds have brought in a few players to strengthen their squad, but Klopp has kept arrivals to a minimum, only bringing in reinforcements in problem areas. However, amid renewed injury concerns, he will need to bring in new faces to fill the void.

Matheus Nunes could be a decent replacement for Thiago as he continues to be attacking and has excellent possession of the ball. The Portugal international continues to distribute the ball efficiently to his team-mates and also does well to set them up in front of goal. The 23-year-old is a decent tackler of the ball and can pull off some key interceptions to win the ball back for his side as well.

Additionally, Nunes would definitely add quality to Klopp’s starting XI and could help the Reds in their run to bring the Premier League crown to Anfield this season. So it would be wise for Jurgen Klopp to bring him to Merseyside before the transfer window closes.
