Liverpool FC injury latest: Nunez, Diaz, Thiago edge closer to return – Liverpool FC

With the international break looming, now seems a good time to assess the squad and recap how Liverpool’s injured players are handling their recovery.

One of the main reasons for Liverpool’s poor form this season has been the constant injuries suffered by the starting XI.

Arthur and Diogo Jota have recently rejoined the group, but while some are returning, others are being declared out.

Luis Diaz – Knee

Hand back: early April

Considering he was Liverpool’s top player in the opening games of the season, Luis Diaz’s absence may have stayed under the radar this season.

It was a frustrating phase as he was due to return during the World Cup but suffered a setback when he had to leave training camp in Dubai in December to have knee surgery.

He’s finally fit and loud again Liverpool echoShe will return to full training next week.

What Klopp said (March 10): A return is “possible”, but only “after the international break”.

Thiago – Hip

From since: 7 February (vs Wolves)
Hand back: April

One man who, by his own standards, hasn’t actually been out for too long this season is Thiago.

However, the Spaniard has been absent from the league since Liverpool lost 3-0 to Wolves.

As with many of the squad’s injuries, the midfielder’s absence has lasted longer than initially expected.

Last week he was seen working on his recovery with Manu Crespo, a fitness trainer specializing in strength training.

What Klopp said (March 10): “Thiago, we’ll see how it develops over the next few weeks.”

Darwin Nunez—Ankles

Initial worries when Darwin Nunez left the Uruguay squad were somewhat allayed with news the injury was a ‘cut to the ankle’ El País.

The reports suggest the injury picked up against Real Madrid, a game in which Nunez was substituted after just 57 minutes.

It has since emerged that Liverpool have asked the attacker to withdraw from Uruguay’s forthcoming friendlies against Japan and South Korea, likely as a precautionary measure.

Stefan Bajectic – adductors

From since: 11 March (vs Bournemouth)
Hand back: Next season

He’s been a surprising shining light in Liverpool’s midfield since joining the team after the World Cup.

However, an “absolutely awful injury” as described by Jurgen Klopp meant he will miss the rest of a breakout campaign in which he showed both class and combat, playing in defensive midfield and slightly further up the field.

What Bajcetic said (March 16): “It’s very sad to say goodbye to this great season but I understand this is part of football and will only make me stronger physically and mentally.”

Calvin Ramsay – Knees

From since: end of January
Hand back: Next season

It wasn’t the season Calvin Ramsay was hoping for after signing from Aberdeen last summer.

With just one full start in the first team – Liverpool’s League Cup win over Derby – the right-back’s development has been stymied by various injuries, culminating in knee surgery in February.

What Klopp said (February 17): “Now he has this injury and the season is over.

“Even if he could come back a little earlier, it doesn’t make sense. Because now it really is [time] to build the boy up physically and then make a fresh start when we leave.”
