Long list of sporting events coming to Rand West City
That Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation has published a list of sporting events taking place in Rand West City from August 13th to September 3rd.
According to Nomazwe Ntlokwana, spokesman for the department, “The events aim to encourage the community to engage in creative spheres through arts and culture and to engage in sports, thus leading a healthy lifestyle. Programs like these therefore keep youth away from drug abuse and other bad behaviors in our society [there is] a need to invoke patriotism and promote nation building.”
She explained that the first event, known as the Hanyani Wellness Program, will be held every Saturday starting Saturday August 13th and ending on September 3rd.
“We will co-host the Hanyani wellness program with West Corridor under the office of MEC Mbali Hlophe; It is the department’s mission to encourage young and old to lead healthy lifestyles and become active citizens of society through exercise.
Many people visit healthcare facilities for conditions that could easily have been prevented with a healthy diet and exercise. The program aims to make Gauteng active, healthy and fit, thereby relieving the health services in the province.
“Elderly and youngsters alike will benefit from activities provided by professionals, such as yoga, aerobics, 5K walk and run, and other recreational games.”
The second event, called Sport for Social Change, will take place on Sunday 14 August.
“Sport for Social Change is a departmental outreach program in partnership with community stakeholders to address social ills and effect change through sport, support communities to fight GBVF, substance abuse and crime, and keep sports and recreation programs active in communities in the west corridor. The Sport for Social Change program helps provide sustained institutional support and the successful implementation of a social cohesion strategy,” said Nomazwe.
