What you should know

The South Alabama Jaguars have been 6-1 against the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns since November 2015, but they have a chance to close the gap a little on Saturday. South Alabama and Louisiana will face off in a Sun Belt bout at 5:00 p.m. ET at Cajun Field. The Jaguars may not have home field advantage, but they do enjoy an 8.5-point advantage in dispersion.

South Alabama won its game against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs last week by a convincing 38-14 score. The contest was all but over by the end of the third, by which time South Alabama had built a 31-7 lead. You can credit much of their success to RB La’Damian Webb, who snapped a TD, and QB Carter Bradley, who passed on 21 tries for three TDs and 178 yards.

The South Alabama defense was a force to be reckoned with as it amassed four interceptions and one fumble. S Yam Banks picked up that interception and then proceeded to rub salt in the wound by taking it back the other way for a touchdown.

The Ragin’ Cajuns suffered a heavy loss last week after failing to capitalize on their early lead against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks. Louisiana came close to stealing the win, but they took the “L” against Louisiana-Monroe 21-17. Louisiana failed to fulfill its potential, falling short of the 9.5-point lead oddsmakers were expecting for the game. Despite the loss, they had strong performances from QB Chandler Fields, who passed on 34 tries for a TD and 231 yards, in addition to a rush for a TD and 31 yards, and WR Michael Jefferson, who was on the other end of that TD and pinned on 105 yards reception. This reception performance made it the first game in which Jefferson received more than 100 yards.

South Alabama is now at 3-1 while Louisiana sits at 2-2. A few defensive stats to keep an eye on: The Jaguars enter the matchup after picking up the ball five times, good for 22nd in the nation. But the Ragin’ Cajuns are even better: They go into the matchup after picking up nine times, good for third in the nation. We’ll see if that lead gives Louisiana a path to victory.
