Man City vs Burnley LIVE: FA Cup result, final score and reaction as Haaland’s hat-trick sends City through

Kompany a city legend – Pep

It has been a humbling return to the Etihad Stadium for former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany. As manager of Burnley, he brought the Championship leaders to Manchester hoping to cause an upset in the FA Cup, but instead his team found themselves on the receiving end of another Erling Haaland masterclass.

For 30 minutes, Burnley held their own, pressing well and keeping the Premier League champions at bay in the final third. Haaland then combined with Alvarez to bring home the first set before adding a second three minutes later after a great run from Phil Foden to send City two goals into the break.

Four more were added in the second half. City picked up the pace and changed gears. Foden’s shot from the post fell to Haaland, who drilled him home to complete his hat-trick before Julian Alvarez netted a brace himself. To add to Burnley’s woes, Cole Palmer came off the bench and nodded home to send City through to the semis.

Erling Haaland only gives one player the top scorer: himself in the coming seasons

If it seemed like a unique occasion for an icon of Manchester City’s past, it was just the usual business of their current idol. Vincent Kompany returned to the Etihad Stadium for the first time since his sensational goal against Leicester in 2019 and his sudden exit, taking his statue to the ground and into the club he transformed into relentless winners.

And then, with precious little romance and typical ruthlessness, Erling Haaland doomed City’s greatest captain to his heaviest defeat as a Burnley manager. It was an even heavier defeat for the Clarets, who lost four times 5-0 at the Etihad under Sean Dyche.

Kompany’s final act as a City player, the day before he announced his departure, was to win the FA Cup. With Pep Guardiola’s side in the semi-finals for the fifth time in six seasons, Ilkay Gundogan could join him in their select group of FA Cup-winning captains.

Haaland had broken a 94-year-old record for most goals in a season for City without finding the net in the FA Cup – to mitigate that he had only played once in the competition before – but he duly scored his sixth hat-trick of the campaign and second in four days.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on BBC One:

“It’s been a good month with Newcastle, Leipzig, Crystal Palace and today was a good, tough game. They went man to man with only [goalkeeper] Stefan Ortega free.

“We had to play more directly on Erling [Haaland] and the wingers. The second half was much better. I was really impressed.

“It’s no surprise to see what Burnley are doing in the Championship. Next season we will face them [in the Premier League].”

Erling Haaland speaks to BBC One

“It was a couple of good games – important games. 7:0 and 6:0 before the national team break is impressive. I am really happy.

“Every goal means a lot to the team. It’s an amazing win against a really good Burnley side. I’m really happy and our next game is at Wembley.

“I think we’re in that part of the season where we should be doing our best. Of course we should always be at our best, but we have to deliver every single game. The last couple of games were finals – that’s what we did.

“No I haven’t [set a target for the season]. I’m a striker, I love to score goals but my focus is not on scoring goals but on creating chances. If I get the chances, there’s a good chance I’ll score.”

“Haaland is a beast. He’s a goalscoring machine. He lives and breathes goals,” says Alan Shearer as part of his BBC One panditry.

“If he doesn’t score, he doesn’t sleep at night. He wants another, then another, then another. He’s fantastic and this team must be a dream with the chances they create.”
